In true GRM spirit, a cross country "Cannonball" style race using streetable 200X cars. No Bullrun 200k cars with luxury hotel stops every night here, just going until you see ocean. Maybe with one stop at the half way mark. Ive heard of an event like this in Europe, but not here. My idea was to go Wilmington NC to San Diego or LA. Once in Colorado, I would put the car on Cali craigslist to recoup some funds soon after I arrive. Enough to party for a couple days and fly home.

Is this a do-able idea all while sticking to posted speed limits.?

The BABE rally comes pretty close. I'm sure with a little prodding they would consider a east, west version.

Far better to go the other way if you want to recoup funds. Better yet, go from Cali to the north east, probably make money on the rally then.

I drove from Cocoa Beach, FL to Bellingham, WA (look at Google Maps, I'll wait...) in 3.5 days solo in my $1800 92 SHO with no radio when I joined the military. Does that count?

I think a fun variation on the beater rally would be to have an event very much like the BABE rally, except all cars participating must be purchased no more than a month before the start date, and it must have been purchased from a complete stranger. Bonus points if its purchased 5 days or less before the start, or from 2 states away from where you live.

Maybe it could be called the Blind Poker Rally.

Kyle Petty does one from Cali to the family Camp in NC...on motorcycles. Great for charities. IIRC, it's called the "Iron Butt" something...

To add some fun budget the teams 1000 miles of highway and the rest must be non-highway roads.

    FTFY.

In the interim this is coming up this summer. Not necessarily a low budget event but more in the spirit of what is being discussed.

Not the first listing on the page, the one further down for Beetleball 48 - Sing Sing to San Quentin

That happens on BABE more than you'd think. At least 2 years out of the 6 I've bought my car under 30 days from the start. My cars almost always come from strangers, last year's car being the exception but I was marshaling not competing.

We've also had teams fly in from the UK or west coast and buy something on Saturday to bring to the start Sunday.

I always wanted to do a "random start rally" You'd know the month but that is it. Once all the entries are in the start point would be mapped to a central location from all the teams. Teams would be given 2 days notice "Arrive in this city in 2 days for the start....go"

Fun idea, but only if people could get a week or more off work at a moments notice which isn't likely for most participants.

my buddy drove himself, his wife, and all their stuff down from Fairbanks to NC in a few days last year when he got out of the Army.
He stopped to visit family, and the military paid his travel expenses, so he had a pretty sweet little trip.
Another friend just got out of the Marines and is driving from San Diego to mid-NC right now with his wife and kid.
Not a fun drive supposedly. lol
I think an east west or west east cannonball style road rally would be fun
