    Coatings of any type (in cars, swain coatings on a hemispherical combustion chamber seems to fit the question)....

    Area of the end caps of a tubular tank (spherical ends) so that painters can get an idea of the amount of material to cover it...

    Calculating the thermodynamics of heating and cooling in a spherical container are much easier with surface area sizes...

    Actually, if you wanted to figure out any heat transfer to or from the sphere it would be a necessity to know the surface area.
