Does anyone know of a home design software that's possibly free?

The wife and I are going to be moving into my grandma's house and we eventually will be remodeling the house in the future. We have been playing around with ideas and I think it would be cool to be able to have a visual aid to show our ideas.

I think Google SketchUp may be what you're looking for. If it isn't, at least its free

To be completely honest, I've only used it once...

+1 to google sketch up. It was designed for making 3-D architectural sketches. Google has tutorials to show you how to use it.

just like Bill, I have only used it once or twice

SketchUp is excellent and the learning curve is low. Search on this site and you should find posts from me and others on how to make it more convenient to use.

The nice thing about SU is that not only is it free, but there are thousands of free components out there in the Warehouse for furniture, cabinets, light fixtures, etc. that can be used to play with your house design.

The only real issue will be printing to scale unless you buy the pro version, which comes with an additional program called LayOut. But if you draw a graphic scale with lines of known length on the ground near your plan, you can use that to adjust your print size percentage until it's pretty accurately to scale.
