at home, i have a wired and wifi system that is hooked up upstairs, and downstairs i have a slingbox that i would like to be able to use with the cable box in the living room. i have a spare D-Link wireless router, what do i need to do to set it up as a bridge to the ethernet port of the slingbox downstairs?
I can't move the cable modem downstairs as the signal is too weak to split and still have useable internet speeds.
suggestions?
DD-wrt wireless bridge. I did this recently with an old Linsys router. Works great. I'm in I.T. and it took me about four hours to do. I'd never reflashed a router before this so I was starting from zero with knowledge of this procedure.
^yep. I have a pair of Linksys routers running DD-WRT bridging between the downstairs and upstairs parts of the house. Works well since they are Wireless-N so the throughput is high enough to stream most HD content.
However, it sounds like what you need to do is to setup the router downstairs to be a wifi client for the network upstairs, essentially you'll be using the D-link as a wireless gaming bridge.

this is exactly what i'd like to do. is this something that can be done with most basic routers, or do i have to have a linksys that i can use DD-WRT on? i'd like to be able to use either the spare d-link or the netgear that is currently running the wireless rather than spend $70 on another router/bridge.

You're Xbox isn't wireless?! Come on guy. Get on board. No need to futz around with wireless bridges if you can wirelessly connect your Xbox. I ran mine like that for eons. The only reason I did the wireless bridge is that I felt like I was getting hammered in Call of Duty due to latency on my network. I was most likely getting fragged because I'm a E36 M3 player with old slow man reflexes.

I bridged 2 routers. I got 2 Cradlepoint MBR900's and set them up. It still wasn't exactly easy. And the bridge stuff doesn't support the latest encryption, only WEP 128 bit, which is about useless, barely keeping honest people honest. Fortunately, I live in the woods.

Must have been Einstein. MLK usually stuck to real words without making them up. Still like the saying, though.
Can you run wire? That is what I did. My cable comes into the basement into the cable modem, from there it runs up the 2nd floor into a WiFi router. From there it runs back down to the basement into a Procurve switch. I put a wall plate behind my TV and ran a wire to the switch. If you can swing it that would be a better solution in my opinion.

i'm another for running wire if you can...
also depends on what router you have... you MAY be able to flash DD-WRT on it... but hard wired is going to be faster and more reliable
also I know most netgears have the wireless bridge mode built in...
as I recall to get the most from a wireless bridge... if you plan on using the additional router as a wireless extender also you really want a dual band router
that being said... I don't have any real first hand experience... I've setup a few routers with DDWRT but never needed it... also i don't care for WEP... more out of passkey options then security (which is minimal)... I may test it out to see if its quicker then the cheap USB wifi dongle on the spare desktop.
