So, today I watched the weather on 3 different channels. All tellimg me that the translucent death that was bearing down on us would be arriving sometime after 10pm. So, since I went in to work at noon and get off at 8pm, I knew I'd have PLENTY of time.... so I backed the vette out and drove it in at noon under a cloudless sky.

At 5pm the translucent death that was bearing down on us arrived.... 5 hours early. So now I get to drive home in an ice storm with 345ft-lbs of torque on 275 summer tires and pray to the magic man in the sky/spaghetti monster to help me get home.

    So.... how stupid was I?

Depends on whether or not you make it home in 1 piece...

the good news is that there will be no traffic at 8pm and the car will be warm and the windows clear....

Just take it easy, drive in the highest gear possible to decrease wheel spin. Lightness on the throttle.

I brought the car up from the back lot to bring it inside and get it clear and warm.... in 2nd OD at 8mph thinking about touching the throttle put it sideways in the road....2nd OD on dry pavement is about 150rpms.

Gonna be a long... LONG 22 mile drive home. Good thing I was born and bred on light ass'd RWD's...

You are gonna have some fun tonight! Good luck, be safe, if you need to get a hotel/motel/friends place. Better to not be home and safe than not be home and in a ditch.

So the lesson here is not to waste your time watching any weather forecasts...

    Be safe!

Just because it has 345ft-lbs of torque doesn't mean you have to use all of them. Think of all the lessons in smoothness you will get tonight.

    Drive smooth and be safe.

I found with summer tyres in snow.. the trick was to let them spin some.. then let off the throttle to let them bite. The inertia would move the car fowards some.. the real trick was NOT to dig a deep hole while doing it

No posts from Bobzilla -- hope he made it home safely.

I suspect that in the right snow conditions, that car would be undriveable.

Wow. It's just like "Into Thin Air" all over again!

    Well, kinda.

I'm here.... made it home fine. No drama. Driving that thing on the ice is just like driving it fast... you have to be loose, and super smooth. the gas pedal is the most precious, delicate egg under your right foot and the funny lever on the right is your friend.

It only took an extra 25 minutes to get home last night (50 instead of 25) and was really eventless. Only a couple times did she want to get buck-nasty crazy but a soft touch and gentle feet did the trick.

I told the wife when I got home: "I want some snow tires."

By the time I hit my neighborhood last week there was 5-6 inches of snow on the neighborhood streets and i decided to drive the fwd hatchback with 4" of ground clearance that morning. I almost got to my driveway. Almost.

I think a new TPS might be in order though before I try that again.... the one in there currently understands "On" and "Off". Not the best thing to do with insta-torque.

You have my deepest sympathy. We had a huge surprise dumping of the white stuff a couple of months ago, and I was in a CTS coupe with low profile, summer tires. Couldn't even make it out of my street, it took me forever just to get back to my house. GM was going to come and get it on a flatbed, but two days later the roads were dry and I took it back.

one thing i learned growing up in an area that can get snow any time from mid October to mid April or so- if there is snow forecasted to arrive at any time in the next 2 days, don't drive something that isn't good in snow.

Luckily I have my snow tires mounted up, and with even more luck I scored a spot in a garage this semester. I may not be able to get back into the garage after tomorrow because we are forecasted to get up to half and inch of ice, and said garage is at the top of a hill.

Snow I can deal with, this ice crap...

I just got snows a few weeks ago and they are worth every penny (I live near Omaha, NE). I got by last summer on BFG SuperSport A/S but just barely. Running Nitto SN2 and I have even ventured into some unplowed parking lots and it did fine (lowered neon manual trans). Now I just have to burn thru the BFGs when it warms up so I can get some summers back on there.
