I guess you aren't allowed to wear an American flag on a Holiday that is really only celebrated in one Mexican city...and a glorified drinking day in this country...

It is not even a holiday in Mexico, makes me sick
I had a Mexican economics teacher once. He told us what May 5th was really about. The French government loaned the Mexican government a bunch of money. The Mexicans defaulted. Well, back then, they didn't send countries to collection agencies (IMF/Greece, anyone?) like they do today. Back then they sent the soldiers in to kick some ass and get their money back. So the French did that, sending their best troops over to kick some butt. The rag-tag Mexican army defeated Napolean's crack troops, and in celebration, they have Cinco de Mayo.
It ain't "Mexican Independence Day." It's "Mexican Don't Pay Your Debts Day."
Only reason I even remember it is it's also my good friend and Jaguar racer Suzie's birthday...

I fixed my kitchen sink (replaced faucet, fixed a drain leak) on Cinco de Mayo. Then I drank several Dos Equis.

I got my 5.9 litre truck running and went for a drive with expired-two-years-ago tags. Insured though. I suppose if I'd gotten a ticket I coulda beaten the cop up

There are unintended side effects of Dos Equis. I went to a museum today, and I was allowed to touch the art. My beard is growing epically, but now has a silver tone to it, instead of my former ginger hue.
It's my gf b'day. I took out to diner and bought her a Guinness. That's pretty Mexican isn't it?
Drinco de Mayo - as a waiter I hate this amateurs day out. Fortunately, of my two jobs, I was working at the Liberty Tree with a whole corridors wall worth of Don't Tread On Me flags, and a neighborhood clientele - fantastic NE seafood, great beer and no Corona pee-water drinking loons.
I had Taco Bell and a Miller "Chill." The irony was delicious.

The school administrator should be fired. He obviously does not know his geography well enough to know that his school is located in the United States of America.

Well, to me, the reason why they wore those shirts to school on Cinco De Mayo was to get what they got: controversy started up. They knew if they were a patriotic symbol of our country on a "holiday for hispanics" would be putting a giant wooden spoon in the immigration pot that is already boiling. Obviously, i do not agree with the actions of the school, sending them home, but they got what they were aiming for, to get the spot light pointed on the "look, they took away our first amendment rights!!" They could have worn those shirts on any other day, say Arbor's day, but they chose to do it on a day that has nothing to do with Americans. It would be the equivalent to a British person walking around on the 4th of July with a giant Union Jack shirt on... Not trying to stir up a debate or pissing people off, which i do not want to do at all, but these kids knew what they were doing and accomplished what they wanted, which was get the spotlight on them about not being able to carry out their rights to wear their stars and bars shirt on a Hispanic holiday (yes, i know its not a real holiday)...
Duke, it would be like a Limey wearing a Union Jack on the 4th of July IN THE UK. Now, if he did that in the U.S., that would be different.
Also, at least one of the students wearing a United States of America flag on their shirt in the United States of America on not-a-real-Mexican-holiday was, in fact, an American of Mexican decent.
Oh, and I like Taco Hell. I eat there about twice a week. It's hard to find decent food when you're a vegetarian and Taco Hell beans are meat-free. Triple Layer Nachos, Bean Burrito no onions and a water, $2.07 out the door. Where else can you eat for two bucks?
um, Duke, I thought every day on American soil had something to do with being American. Were the kids consistent? maybe not, but having a foreign nations E36 M3, without any respect to place, waved in your face might have raised their awareness for a day at least. The latina's quote about them waving their flags on July 4th is facile. seen an immigration rally here in the District lately? I've attended, been around, said rallies and never felt the need to wave an Irish flag the way I've seen every central american nations flags flaunted - in the cause of American citizenship, go figure that one out. Molly Maguires had to be forced to accept their new place. large immigrant groups today need to realize that subsuming old identities is a large part of the American experience - nothing racist here either, I get along wonderfully with all of the central Americans that i work with here in D.C. Eurotrash however, from their leftist politics, poor tipping, oft-times boorish dining etiquette irritate the hell out of me.
Duke it's just another made up holiday here in the states to get E36 M3faced. Mexico barely celebrate it....man the Irish, Polish, German, and Italian immigrants of the 1800 and 1900s were glad as hell to be in this country and settled in quite nicely when they got here. These other groups are getting out of hand with all the crap they want our gov't to bend over and give them.
Oh, i know, i have some hispanic friends that tell me its not a relevant holiday. What i am saying is how ironic is it that they are sporting their patriotism on a day that has nothing to do with America? Especially when the topic of immigration is in the forefront of national headlines. Like i said, i dont want to start an argument with you guys, and i read your comments with an open mind
We had fajita burritos at Chipotle. Nothing's more mexican than Chipotle.
Real Mexican food was Sunday.
