    Bear with me... long:

I have been racing online with iRacing... this is my 2nd winter and while I'm not an alien I do pretty well considering I do not spend much time on it. This past week I was struggling to get up to race speeds in the new MX-5 cup car and hit a wall around a second off the pace of the middle (regular guy) tier. I confirmed my middle of the road status by starting 5th, 6th and 4th and only improving by 1 position each race. So... consistent and average.

I happened to be at a friends house this week - he is a new rookie and we were just screwing around to get him up to speed. I logged in as me, on his machine, and easily did over a FULL SECOND a lap better, consistently for two full practice sessions. I came home - and went right back to my normal lap times.

He has the same wheel and the same processor - can video card or memory performance help lap time? My frame rate is good - but he has a better card. We both have great ping times so its not a network thing... The conclusion seems plausible but the implication is completely unfair and something that the software should be able to compensate for to even the playing field.

Am I facing the same issue I have with my REAL car and find that even in the fake world... I can't afford to win?

What framerates are you seeing, and what sort of monitor setup do each of you have?

I see 55-74fps - I have a threshold of 48 set and have never hit it.

    I have a Dell 22' E228WFP widescreen driven off an NVidia GeForce 8600 GT 540Mhz clock, 128 bit, 400Mhz memory clock, 512MB

He has a better NVidia card, similar Dell monitor specs but 24"

With those sorts of framerates, i don't think it's your PC that is making the difference, you're basically getting a frame for every vertical refresh.

Have you tried having your friend come to your house to be an audience as you drive you computer?

yea...maybe your machismo kicks in when your homeboy is around. Try it with a woman as well, if your laps times go down, then I've got good news for you! I just saved a whole boatload of money by switching my car insurance to Geico!

I hear there might be some extra time in the bottom of a glass of scotch - too bad I quit.

I have an ASUS with a NVIDIA Optimus processor and there is an option to turn the Nvidia Graphics on or off. Your computer may have this. To check, go to Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Nvidia Control Panel then turn the NVIDIA On and adjust the settings to performance. I hope this helps, I can get 120 FPS while on iRacing. But I quit that cuz its too expensive, so I got rFactor.

I also love rFactor - I cannot recco the Historic GT mod highly enough. I have pissed away tons of time in old vintage iron reliving my youth... the cool one I never had where I was a race car driver.

iRacing is great though when your idiot friends can't make time for a race. I can find a full field anywhere, any time and the rules keep it from being a wreck-fest (most of the time).
