The preserve in Zanesville also had cheetahs, giraffes and camels. Lutz called the animals very big and aggressive but said a caretaker told authorities they had been fed on Monday.

FWIW, though, I didn't cite any story before.....I said that when I lived in Zanesville [over a decade ago] you could see a giraffe every now and then on a farm. It was probably his.....I never saw anything that led me to believe he had any other exotics.

Evidently Ohio has some of the most lax regulations for exotic and dangerous animals, and the highest rate of reported of attacks stemming from the same. I'm sure that's a statistical anomaly.

May exotic animals feast on this sick berkeley's entrails while he remains conscious for all eternity.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, OH MY!

I would HATE to have to try and kill a tiger or lion with police issue firearms. They probably had what.....9mm pistols and maybe a 12 ga. pump.

That picture is terrible. Did they really have to shoot the camels and possibly giraffes? Although I don't like it I can understand the tigers, bears, lions, and apes but camels? Seriously?

Heres another story from the area... Also, we were out at a bar in Cleveland last night, (2$ seasonal beers and IPA speciale), and we were shooting off ideas of what could be done with the animals once they were captured...none of them included killing them. Except I guess there one was one monkey with syphilis, according to my brother...that one we could've done without.

Off note: At my high school, our mascot was a Bengal tiger. At the beginning of each football season we would have a tiger cub, and there was a monk that would raise it throughout the season and take it to games. We had a live tiger at most events in the fall and early winter...it was pretty cool but I always wondered what happens to the tiger(s) after we got rid of it...I hope it's not one of the ones pictured

I don't think any were killed after capture. They were killed in liu of capture due to lack of resources. They had to. Makes me .

I'm fine with zoo's, game preserves, etc that are staffed by professionals, but these 'private collections' need to stop.

If you watched him at the press release he actually was crying.

Seriously? Bengal tigers? I'd have a hard time shooting one unless it was coming for me or another person.

I think once the order was given, the authorities just went hunting, regardless of the danger the animal posed.

I'm not against hunting, but there are lots of zoos out there hurting for money that would have loved (and benefitted) from having a Bengal tiger exhibit.

It was a tragic situation, but if there are eighteen Bengal tigers loose in my neighborhood I don't want to wait around for someone to assess the danger level.

As was reported they tried using tranquilizer darts but it wasn't proving successful, plus this was all going on in the middle of the night - they didn't want to shoot a dart into one of the animals, and have him go off and hide somewhere just so he could wake up really pissed off.
