How do KBB values for ATVs compare to their real-world values?

So I am a lawyer in a small town. In lieu of cash, I've been offered a nice ATV as payment for services to be rendered. I quoted the client a fee of roughly 2k. He instead offered me an '04 Honda 400EX in excellent shape. According to KBB, retail for this quad is $2215.

Asking prices on the local CL seem to be in line with book value. I have no idea about actual selling prices. I know that around here (MO), selling prices of cars tend to be about 10-15% under KBB value, but I'm a cheapskate and may be biased.

Love to have one. Seriously. But I live in a Duplex in town, and the only spot I'd have to use it regularly is my parent's house...they've already got two that I'm welcome to ride whenever I like (although they're both utility models). Plus I'm without a truck to transport one at the moment.

Sounds like you need to do more Lawyering and get a Truck out of the deal too

I'd say that's a good deal for a 400. ATV's are getting really big motors these days, and a 400 is considered pretty small IMHO. (mine is a 400, but a two-stroke) 4WD is also a factor. If it looks like a utility but has 2WD it will go for less. The race quads are all 2WD so it doesn't matter there. List it for $2500 and take $2000.

    (insert obligatory Lawyers-are-scum joke here)

A 400EX is a sport quad 2wd. A nice machine even now. Not so fast to considered a widow maker but fast enough to scare you. 2-2.5K is about the right range for that quad.

Of course it all depends on the condition of it. Does it have any goodies on it (nerf bars, exhaust, wheels, tires)? That can make the value rise a little.

Going off what he's told me (haven't seen it in person, but I know this guy and trust him), it's in decent shape, good plastics, has some hours but runs nice. Has a brand new set of wheels with brand new sand tires that go with it, it's got half-worn regular knobbies on it now. Stock motor, stock pipe.
