I didn't see this posted anywhere when I searched so hopefully it isn't a repost. Great 4 minute video showing the fine safety feature of vintage racecars set to a delightfully cheery tune. http://vimeo.com/20247765

Crazy watching so many thrown out of the car. When did seat belts come into use? How about roll cages? That film turned my stomach.

The old therory used to be that a "belt" would reduce your chances of being thrown clear of the accident.

For a long time they were more concerned about a seatbelt trapping them in a fire than by being crushed by a rolling car.

    Intense.

Not to defend non seat belt use (although sprint karts still follow the "safer to get thrown" ideology), but there were quite a few of those that I'd say the driver survived because he was thrown.

Especially considering there weren't cages to prevent the car from landing on their head or crushing them inside.....

This thread reminds me my dad has some F1 race footage from the '60s in England. I should get on the interwebs.

safety nazis can be alright. There would be more than a couple extra RIP threads on this board without them.

Wow. I have huge respect for the racing drivers of old. It was real "death or glory" type stuff back then.

Nuts. Thats like a motorcycle race plus hockey. Keep in mid as well, that race safety stewards of old, much like tennis players of the 1700's, wore full suits with dress shoes so that, in the event of an accident, they could leap in to assist.

I think that's the best consecutive 4 minutes of automotive footage I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing. Love the driver's feet where his head should be @ 1:40.

Jackie Stewart rallied hard to bring about some of those safety measures - and took a lot of flack from the purists of that time too. I think he'd already proved he had the cojones.
