Just to clarify on the viewing angle thing, its not like a huge difference but I did notice the picture was not quite as sharp looking on the LCD when sitting on our love seat where the plasma looked the same.

Either way you go they are leaps and bounds better than a regular TV and maybe my decision was colored by the fact that I have had to deal with dead laptop screens for the last 10 or so years.

My inlaws got a big Plasma about 5 years ago before they got cheap. Like buy half a new car not cheap. It didn't turn on one day this fall and they were understandably bummed. They called a TV repair guy, expecting that he'd come out and say, "Yea, that 7k TV set is junk, go buy a new one for $1k at Walmart."

It turns out that it was just a power cord. That was recalled.

    woohoo!

That said, I love my Sony Bravia LCD.

Well, I am still waiting on the BIG tv for the basement. It will sit on furniture, so a DLP is an option. If it threw a bunch of heat, I would behappy because the meatlocker that is my basement could use it. The longevity issue might be the deciding factor. I drive a motorcycle from 1980 and a car from 1985. I tend to keep things a long time.

I did however get a 22" HDTV for the bedroom as a way to get my feet wet. Totally impulse buy, the local Circuit City is going out of business and I picked it up for next to nothing. The quality is what you would expect from an el-cheapo made-in-who-knows-where brand, but the few true HD channels and shows look great. Enough that I am saving my pennies for something quality for the basement.

I got a Samsung PN50A650 (50" 1080p Plasma) and I wouldnt give it up for any LCD. The plasma has such nicer color. THere is a reason that most of the high dollar sets are still plasma (Pioneer Elite for example)

Someone's already mentioned the poorer viewing angle of the LCD, and if you have a large living room with a large sectional, it could be a problem. Also, the difference in the screen material can make a difference. LCD's have that plasticky material that is very easily scratched, where as the plasma are glass.

I have small kids, and am horrified of them scratching the screen. While the plasma screen would be harder to scratch, it does have a lot more glare.

I've looked at the lcd's and plasmas next to each other, even the 120hz lcd... I don't see how anyone can not see the difference in clarity between the two. The plasma has always looked much "cleaner" and sharper to me.

Both me and my daughter have had both an LCD and a Plasma in the house at the same time, but fortunately my Plasma went out and I got to replace it with another LCD. She still has hers in the house and even the kids complain about having to watch the Plasma.

boo berkeleying hoo, i don't like watching the plasma. then get off your berkeleying ass and go play on the monkey bars or ride your bike or climb a tree.

oops, sorry, i only meant to think that.

They have LCD models that come with the glass cover for the screen. Very few people buy them due to the glare.

Vladha I'm with you, sitting them side by side I don't see how people can't see the difference it's dramatic, the LCD has much more fine detail especially in dark areas like shadows, clothes and faces of black people. The gratuitous night time city shots that so many shows throw in just to show how real the scenes look with 1080i are so much better in LCD.

Come to think of it, I can't think of a thing that the LCD isn't better at. Like I said, I've had both and I've had them side by side.

I like both equally well.. but the longer lifespan and lower powerconsumption of the LCD wins me over

I don't know...it's hard to say. I work in the higher end A/V market and have seen a ton of TVs. I can't think of anything that's bad, really. They all look pretty good these days, and you could kill a lot of time searching for that last 10%. We were having lunch at a sports pub the other day, and even the off-brand displays they had in there looked really, really good.

I think I agree with the guy that says you're only going to bring ONE home. There won't be a side-by-side comparison at your house, really.
