As long as Leno doesn't let the advertisers run the show he should do OK. The good thing: he's got enough money that he can afford to tell them to stick it.
Listen to the show sometime. He has the ability to appeal to the LCD, but sorry--it's WAY more intelligently done than you claim/perceive. I've been a fan for 14 years and I HATE stuff that appeals to the LCD (like American Idol). He's still one of the best interviewers on the planet.
If anyone is targeting the LCD, it's Leno.
