http://www.marquetteks.org/land.html (love how they misspelled giveaway in the title bar)

Marquette Ks is offering FREE building lots in an effort to increase their population. It actually seems legit and seems to be a throwback to the 1862 Homesteader act.

Perfect GRM fodder, cause it's free. I just don't know what else there is in this part of Kansas, cept for corn.

edit... Awww crap.. the title said lets all partY like it's 1862..

double edit: seems like other kansas towns are offering free land http://www.atwoodkansas.com/free_land.html

When I was living in KS a few years back there were a bunch of towns doing that.

They'd have to have been paying me quite a bit more than free to live there. Most of KS is a magical combination of the worst of both the south and the west without the good parts of either.

We're offering $1 lots here in east-central IL. Our town has developed a couple new subdivisions and still has quite a few lots left.

They require you to start construction within a year, though they allow extensions on a case-by-case basis. We also have cheap commercial buildings too. Don't expect to survive by foot-traffic, although you could be a destination business or Internet-based.

Low taxes, almost non-existent crime, good schools, pretty remote yet only an hour away from two Big-Ten colleges, 1.5 hours from Chicago & Indy. Not the worst place in the world.

Does it require a residence or could my dad buy up some $1 land and put a big garage on it?

    In reply to mtn:

Yes they require a residence, and there is a minimum square footage. I believe you are allowed a pole-barn type outbuilding though(I know it's allowed in most of the town, and regular lots are pretty cheap too).

Do they require owner occupants, or can they be bought, built on, and sold?

I realize there may not be anyone to sell them to...

In our case, I've heard specifically of one house being built than sold, but I'll ask about the official details.
