For a while now I've been curious about running a small limo/driving service. I don't think the market is terribly competitive here, but we do have some degree of nightlife, and I've never seen any for-hire cars around aside from standard taxis. I suspect there's a market for a competitively-priced ride in a classy/kitschy older barge. Seventies Lincolns, for instance, are dirt cheap and plentiful around here.

I'm not thinking of this being a primary source of income, but I have a bunch of weirdo friends who might be interested in getting together on something like this, and it would mainly be an excuse to play with old cars and hopefully have the hobby pay for itself.

However, I realize this is probably a pretty tightly regulated field. Would insurance and licensing make this unfeasible for a moonlighting gig?

I think we have a couple pro drivers on the board here. I'd be interested in hearing about the ins and outs of the business.

I have been a cab and transport business for 10 years now.

In Ohio and Indiana Insurance is regulated by the state, it is not cheap, say $3K per vehicle roughly.

    You need to market extensively.

Spend money on parts and keep the cars in excellent condition.

You will need to be licensed by the city you operate in, you may need a Chauffeurs license also.

Some cities have extensive regulations you will need to address and comply with.

You'll also have to deal with drunk bridesmaids barfing in the back seat.

That problem stops when you bill them for a detailing. Seriously, the day I put that into place the puke stopped.

Amazing how much control a drunk has when you threaten their wallet.
