    So, all of the esoteric and arcane music thrown out in the "Rock and Roll" thread got me thinking... any personal favorite bands with a strong local or cult following that you think people need to be introduced to?

    I have to present you with:

    The Asylum Street Spankers - from Texas, doing acoustic blues/bluegrass/jazz/stuff, in which they will regularly quote/reference heavy metal and other weird stuff

    Jackie Greene - From Sacramento (I went to school with him), does "Roots Rock" and is regularly compared to artists like Dylan, Waits, and Springstein

    and, The Brodies - a local Sacramento Punk-ish band

    The Gaslight Anthem- a New Brunswick NJ punk band, This is what Bruce Springsteen/John Cafferty would have sounded like if they both played punk music.. Absolutely one of my favourite bands.

    The Goodnight Lights- Philadelphia Pa, gotta' support my roommates! If you dig The Pixies and Pavement, you'll like these guys. They're an EXCELLENT band live.

    Lots of good music posted so far. I really like The Goodnight Lights.

    Little Red - a 60's Rock 'n Roll revivalist band from Melbourne, Australia. As such, they're not outstandingly original, but they are incredibly catchy.

    If there was any justice in the world, a whole lot more people would know who Gerald Collier is -- Fantastic songwriter. Go take a listen to "Whored out again".

    Enamel They're a good, moderately heavy local band. Their newest disc is the best new album I've heard in the past year.

    Not local, but I was recently turned on to Bob Log III. Pretty cool, out-there sorta blues/one-man-band stuff...and he's got some of the coolest stagewear!

    I saw these guys...I mean these chicks...I mean, first it was a couple chicks, and then it was just one chick, in Chapel Hill a couple months ago. Freaking amazing performance. The singer/guitar player was wailing and flailing and rocking out for the first few songs, while another young lady beat the berkeleying drums like they owed her money. The singer then did a couple of solo tunes on a tenor guitar that almost had me in tears. The recorded stuff doesn't do it justice, but it's still pretty damned good.

    There's been a band around central Illinois for years now called n.i.l.8...in a just world, they would have been huge years ago. Gotta love a band that claims Salvador Dali as one of their primary influences....

    not so much local bands, but some of my favourites at the moment.

    These are punk/folk punk bands. Bands like these prove that punk is not dead after all.

    Excellent partying drinking music as well. We used to throw big parties out a friends house in college, me and another friend would sit around playing their songs on the acoustic guitar and singing.

    Helped me to not spend the night along more than a few times. hehehe

    They're still around? I remember hearing them years ago.

    THey've been "on hiatus" for years now, but when I lived in western NY there was a band from Toronto with a pretty good cult following and a great stage show called Moxy Fruvous. They're still probably my all time favorite band. Picture Barenaked Ladies but cornier, and with 4 part harmonies instead of 2.

    The last "local" band I paid much attention to was Burn Witch Burn... featured the ex-singer from the Dead Milkmen... But they've been on hiatus as well for a number of years... From Answers.com:

    Formed in the Philadelphia area following the dissolution of smart ass alternative rockers the Dead Milkmen, Burn Witch Burn is led by former Milkmen frontman Rodney Linderman (better known in his earlier years as Rodney Anonymous). Instead of sticking to his former band's amateurish, punky guitar rock, though, Burn Witch Burn is more of a Pogues-influenced Celtic folk-punk outfit, finding Linderman playing tin whistle, recorder, melodeon, and hurdy-gurdy in addition to singing. The band is rounded out by Vienna Linderman (violin/vocals), Rob Piekarski (guitar/mandolin), Bill Fergusson (mandolin/banjo/bouzouki), Steve Demarest (bass), and Todd Yoder (drums). Burn Witch Burn gigged mostly around the Philly area for about four years before getting down to business and recording their first album.     FWIW, the band I'm now employed by, the LoCash Cowboys, has a serious cult following. I didn't really expect to see quite so many people in Nashville that I saw last week in Tampa. I really thought following bands around went out of style.

    Cowboy Mouth was a spin-off from Dash Rip Rock. Used to see both of them regularly when I lived in Louisiana. Good live shows.

    It's Velveeeta. Gotta use the third 'e'. Can't be using a trademark, now. I saw them at the Music Farm a long time ago.

    My b-i-l was the drummer for a local band called Daddy Know It All. They were getting to be in pretty big demand when one of the band members comitted suicide.
