    I found "friction tester" hits pretty close to home (non automotive haha). Got any specifics?

    It's got a special fifth wheel in the back. When the weather's nasty, they send someone out on the runway who drives down it with the wheel set down. The device then measures the surface friction to see if de-icing is required.

    I think Saab friction testers have been around awhile: I seem to recall seeing a pic of a 99 from the 70s.

    Thanks Procain. I wondered if there was anything special about the car itself, like, it had a 600 hp engine and 6 wheel drive or something sweet like that.
    And yes Man_machine, that things is quirky enough to do well at the challenge and with the paint scheme that's on it, you could really do some cool stuff.
