Anyone have any experience with Sleep Number mattresses?
Pros, cons or advice about any other brands, stores, ways to buy, etc. I hate mattress shopping but it's time....

About a year ago we went looking for mattresses and my wife liked the Sleep Number. I did some online research and we ran away. I don't think I found anyone with anything good to say about it after it got home and was used.
We ended up with a Tempurpedic and it is awesome.

It's simply an air mattress inside a foam casing.
And the pump will wake you up in the middle of the night when it has to compensate for leaks.

This. Everyone I know with one said it was great for 10 minutes in the store and sucked at home, and they leak/break fairly frequently too.
We went latex foam and have been very happy. The Wife didn't like the sunken-in feeling of a memory foam. My only complaint with mine is with the sewn on fluffy topper that's started to get a lumpy after 2 years but the latex itself should last a lifetime.

i stayed in a hotel that had the sleep number beds in it earlier this year and was seriously not impressed. its basically nothing more than an air mattress with an inflate/deflate remote control. you'd think that for the money they get for them they'd quiet the little infating pump down some.
i always like the "heavenly bed" at hampton inn i believe, as well as whatever they have at holiday inn express.

The latex foam is much better than the memory foam. The memory foam holds the heat (that's what makes it work) and you could sweat to death on one of them. Unfortunately it's trendy to put a memory foam layer on all kinds of beds.
There is a foam that draws the heat away from the body. It was used in pillows a few years back. I'd love to be able to find some of that.
I recently saw a heating and cooling mattress that had a air chambers in it and a small fan under the bed. With hairdryer type heating elements and just a fan for the cooling it did a fabulous job, but not $5,000 worth of a good job.

We were mattress shopping almost a year ago, after much online research myself(hint: check out sleeplikethedead.com), we got the Tempurpedic Cloud set.
It is a really awesome mattress - and much better than our old one with the springs poking through! - but I am a bit disappointed in it. The density of the mattress is just a little too high for a 150lb skinny guy like me. I think someone closer to average would probably love it.
The Tempur pillow is awesome, however. Just don't get into a pillow fight with it, or someone will be going to the hospital...

It smells like tires and the pump is irritating. The ONLY positive I can come up with is that the company was not deceptive at all in its practices and took it back without a hassle.

I love our sleep number bed. We've had it for at least five years, I haven't changed the settings on it in over a year so pump noise is irrelevant to me. It cured my problems of waking up with a back ache. My only suggestion is to get a king. The bladders in our queen are a little narrow. My wife and I are skinny, so it doesn't really matter.

My brother and his wife have had a sleep number bed for years, and as far as I know they're still happy with it.

Hated ours. Air mattresses are for guests on the floor. The fact that they are two seperate air bags makes it worse. There is a huge crater in the middle of the bed. Gave it to my parents years ago. My dad hates it, but my stepmom loves it, so he's stuck.

As for shopping advice...
A buddy of mine went to a mattress store and asked if they had anything nice in the back that they could sell for a good price.
They had a really nice mattress there that had been discontinued and superceded by a newer model. One of those super thick ones with like 6 inches of memory foam on top. I think the mattress and box spring was like an $1500+ combo, he talked the guy into selling him just the mattress for around $800.

Just picked up a Tempurpedic recently after having a no-name foam mattress.
I won't go back. This is by far the most comfortable bed I've ever had, and I NEVER wake up with any tingly body parts anymore (well, not tingly in a bad way
).
I'm a side-sleeper, though, so that makes me much more picky with beds.

Thanks for all the feedback, I kind of had a feeling about the SN beds but thought I'd ask; more importantly my wife wasn't thrilled with the idea of one of those anyway.

We have a sleep number and love it. Once you set the pressure, you leave it alone and forget about it. Takes a good two weeks to find out what pressure you like. Ours doesn't automatically come on or anything, so it doesn't wake you up. Had it for more than 5 years. I have a really bad back, but this bed is the most comfortable spot for me when my back acts up.

A slightly left-field suggestion - I like futon type beds, but my wife doesn't so much. The last 'mattress' I had for my futon bed - one that would work in any bed - was actually a custom made futon that was specifically designed for my weight and took into account my back problems. That was in the UK and it still came in at a similar price point as a good mattress.

Tempurpedic pillows beyond being heavy are flat in the morning as well as many times during the night. The heat (tempur part) works to cause the pillow to sink (flatten) and then you have to wake up and "fluff" it so there goes part of your night's sleep.
Of course you are going to wake up even if it's not flat because you'll think you are sleeping on an electric blanket. Those pillows and mattresses really hold the heat.
I end up with an aching neck after a night or 2 on the tempurpedic pillow.

The top two mattress companies, in terms of customer satisfaction and according to Consumer Reports are Tempurpedic and The Original Mattress Factory, IIRC.

I actually sleep on a real air mattress... On the floor. That's my bed, and I find it more comfortable than an inner spring. Also easier to move, and much cheaper. Just have to turn on the pump once or twice a week.

I don't mind sleeping on one of the newer air mattresses either. They do make noise and you have to be careful of them, but I don't mind it at all.
