I have one of those co-workers. He likes to bounce ideas off of me because I can usually come up with a simpler solution. Not that he ever follows said solution.

And now my package has gone back to the first Chicago location it was at, and back again to the 2nd Chicago location it was at.

I have a good friend like that. Doesn't matter what it is, he has to argue with whatever someone else suggests.
Now, any time he asked for advice on how to do something, I ask him how he would do it. When he finishes describing his long and frequently stupid idea, I respond with, "That's exactly how I would do it!" It saves me a lot of words he won't listen to anyway.

That is pretty good. I will try to remember.
I might come across as a guy who would question advice. I tend to think out loud, since making myself explain what I'm planning helps me to see, or be reminded of, logic errors. Having an argument- er, I mean, discussion is ever so handy sometimes
Another day, another berkeleying sinus headache. This is like number 4 since Friday. I had one yesterday as well. I took 800mg of ibuprofen when I got to work and another 800mg when I got home.
I really hate to take that much as I know it's rough on the liver but damn, it's seriously the only way I can kinda sorta function.
I have always suffered from headaches. Back in 2007 or so, I had an MRI to see if there was a tumor or something but it came back clear. Surprisingly, the only think that helped was seeing a chiropractor.
*sighs*
I think that diet and exercise are only going to help so much with my BP when I'm still dealing with the ridiculous crap on the cabin build stressing me the berk out.
When the builder canceled on our meeting he said that they planned to start on the decks and stairs on Monday (two days ago) since they now had all the materials. Yay!
Text today to check up on things and on whether the well drilling had started. Builder replies that no, they were hoping to get started on Friday and Saturday.
Great! Only one problem- the forecast for the area for Friday and Saturday is just 'Rain.' No, '70% Chance of rain,' just, 'Rain.' So, another week of nothing at all getting done- and Saturday will mark the 1-month point until the January 15th completion date that the new agreement set out, after which we start docking the final bill... and I'll be more shocked than EVER before if they're able to take the cabin from the state it's in to ready to move into in just a month, and that's not even considering that said month includes Christmas and New Years and the likelihood that there will be days where it's either snowing or (as was the reason given why they weren't working this week) it's too cold and icy to be climbing the hill or being up on ladders.
Topping things off, the well drilling still hasn't started (it was supposed to have started the week after Thanksgiving) AND the development owner who is supposedly coordinating getting the electric run hasn't responded to our calls or texts for the last week.
Working out my parental leave and bereavement leave. berkeley HR. Seriously. berkeley them.
Daughter was born November 5th. She passed on the 19th. Thanksgiving was the 22nd. Her funeral was Monday the 26th. I returned to work on Monday the 3rd.
We get 3 weeks of Parental leave, fully paid, which can be taken in 1 week increments. They call it Parental Leave in the handbook, but it is actually coded as Bonding leave. We get 3 days of Bereavement leave.
You would think that this should be an easy situation. You would think that I could just take Bonding leave Nov 5-19, then again Nov 26-30. Bereavement leave Nov 19-21, Thanksgiving Nov 22, and a single vacation day on the 23rd. You'd think that you don't want to make this harder on a devastated person. But nope, I have to take vacation time for November 22 through Nov 30. Because apparently you cannot bond with your dead child. Apparently you cannot get paid for a holiday if you weren't scheduled to work the day prior, which I wouldn't have been thanks to the bereavement leave. What a berkeleyed up situation.
At least my boss is super cool: "DId you tell them you took vacation earlier in the year?" No. "Cool. You didn't take vacation earlier in the year."

Man, that sucks. Nothing like making an impossible situation just that extra bit harder. I'm sorry.

No kidding. I was ready to lose it on the HR rep, but what is he gonna do? It really requires a policy change, but how many people even at my company lose a 2 week old child?
At least my aforementioned cool boss is basically letting me take days off over Christmas without actually taking them off.

Wow, that really sucks but this is the way to handle it. The HR people should've been able to figure that out.

You might have a sinus infection.
Ugh I hope not. My sinuses feel dry/tight sometimes but no green discharge or anything. Lots of pressure and pain though.
I'm stupid busy tying up loose ends so I can move 2900 miles in a couple of weeks. I seriously do not have time for this berkeleyery.

Our HR people can suck like that too. Most of our managers devote too much of their coming up with workarounds for what should be simple issues.
I told him how I'm going to be an operating engineer. I'm going to get married. Told him he's going to have grandkids and that I would tell them stories about their badass Grandpa. We made our peace. I smiled and I kissed him goodby.
What is my obsession with attempting to learn difficult new things, knowing full well that I'm berkeleying awful at it and hate being bad at things?

Can't spend $250k to fix a bridge that's been out for 6 months, but we can spend $400k giving away overdose reversal drugs? Really? berkeley this state.

One is an inconvenience, one keeps people from dying.. I get it if you think addicts are doing it to themselves, but plenty of what we each do is self destructive, but I still want that ambulance to come if/when my choices come home to roost.
My rant: things go wrong, I get it. But so much goes right, too; why can't my brain accept that and move on from errors and mistakes??
I bought a new refrigerator a few weeks ago and my wife took delivery of it while I was out of town on business. I get home, take a look at the fridge, and notice a dent just above the ice dispenser glimmering in its stainless steel reflectiveness like a lost hiker signaling a search plane with a mirror.

Rant just to rant:
If you're looking to delegate a thing so you aren't tasked to do everything, and I tell you that I will take care of said thing, just let me do it.... I understand you are the authority and I respect that, but could you be a little easier to work with at least and let me actually DO things? The constant, "You're in charge of this now, but you can't do anything of substance without talking to me and making sure I agree with you" is very tiring. Many days I feel like stepping back and moving on or taking a very background position.

Another reason to replace HR with a set of small shellscripts: They handle unusual situations that need some human touch and reasoning in the same way.

I've learned one thing over the years: I will never let an appliance delivery person into my house again. Drop the appliance outside or in the garage, I will inspect there, if it's OK, I sign and you go. Otherwise they *will* damage something either in the house or on the appliance when taking it inside.
