The swelling in my lower back and hip is down enough I may be able too sleep without pain meds tonight! I also learned the doctor calls it my hip and not my upper asscheek

My book finally came in from England. I was starting to worry because of the lack of shipping updates, but it's here, numbered, autographed and all.
We finally got a place! Signed the lease a few days ago and pick up the keys Wednesday. Also got a new couch and small dining room set (it's a small duplex). But holy crap... After a little more than a year staying with the folks after moving out here, it'll be nice to finally have our own place again. And it has its own fenced backyard, and washer/dryer hookups. And off street parking.
O'Reilly has Rotella T5 for 15 bucks a gallon. I hit my purchase limit, I'll call that a win for the day.
We've got to actually sit down and sign the lease paperwork, but we've shaken hands on the new shop space and should be moving in come January! It's a little more than we wanted to spend initially, but having heat and plenty of open space will be a real treat for us.
Passed the test a couple weeks ago and the FCC has just updated my license status to Amateur Extra, top of the ham heap. I could operate on all bands and ranges available for hams, if I had a radio....
Managed too slowly clean up the area of my basement I use too play with vintage bikes. Compared too barely being able too walk last week I feel great about accomplishing anything.
It's finally not 20 degrees out and also not raining/snowing- so bundled up in my cold-weather gear and aired the tires up on the bicycle and pedaled my way in to work this morning. Despite the 32-degree weather it was actually one of the more comfortable cold-weather rides I've had with the new bar mitts on the bike. May try riding with the lighter actual biking gloves this afternoon and seeing how comfortable that is.
My wife gave me her Surface 4 tablet a couple weeks ago since she wasn't using it. I do a lot of taking notes in Fiinote for personal use and OneNote for work and I've been using a Samsung S-Pen tablet for a while and loving it. I was really getting in to the Surface and loving the pen and all that, plus since we're O365 at work, I had all the regular office apps just like on my work laptop so I could really work on the thing. Last night it decided to install a firmware upgrade without asking and when it was finished with an epic reboot operation, the touchscreen no longer worked. Some searching brought me to some angry threads on the MS support forums about people being told to pound sand since the warranty was expired on these, but a couple people said that after talking to support for 2+ hours and going to shift supervisors and stuff they were able to get replacements. This morning I decided to take a chance and opened up a support case on their website.
I was on the phone for about a half hour, but about 25 minutes of that time was spent just waiting for the tech on the other end of the phone to collect some data to document the ticket. The first five minutes were him verifying the problem and explaining that this was a known issue and they would be temporarily re-activating my warranty to exchange the tablet for me. I didn't even have to ask for that, once I described the problem in about four sentences and verified the error code I was getting, he immediately told me that they were going to take care of it for me. No escalating, no asking, no justifying. They're even going to email me a pre-paid shipping label. The only downside is that I have to ship it to them and be without until they send one back, but he gave me a 6-8 business day timeframe once I drop mine off at the carrier.
There are a lot of terrible customer service stories out there, and I realize that I'm probably riding on the shoulders of all those people that had to yell and scream and demand for the last couple months when this problem started happening.... But I have to give MS credit - they might have bungled the first round of complaints, and it's a problem that should have been avoided by better testing and design, but they've gotten their poop grouped and are making it right.
I just took a little bit of leftover buffalo chicken dip and mixed it with last nights leftover crockpot mac n cheese for lunch and it was way better then I expected. I was just eating it because I'm cheap but now I want more
Last week, I couldn't get my firestarter to light in the woodburning stove.
Tonight, I used the heat gun. The firestarter still wasn't interested, but the actual wood was keen.
Stacking the firestarter on top of the burning log eventually did it.
I started my firestarter off of my fire wood, rather than the other way around.
I just got a signed renewal on a lease I was worried about.. corporate stuff takes a while but it worked out. Wonderful.
My neighbor saw me loading up all my scrap metal into my truck and asked if I was willing to take a set of Kia wheels in for him. He didn't want anything for them, he just wanted them out of his garage. I told him sure, no problem and followed him across the street and into his garage. I was expecting some gross old 14 or 15s.
Matched set of 17x7 Sorento wheels in boxes. They're seriously brand new. Mint. No curb rash. They look like they were on a car for a few weeks, tops. I confirmed a few times, "you just want to throw these away? You know someone will give you money for these, right?". Absolutely doesn't care. He's even a car guy. He's got an LS powered Scout and a pretty rad lowered Rambler. Zero berkeleys given about making some scratch off these wheels.
I asked him if he would be bothered if I sold them instead of trashing them, to which he replied no. So I gave them a 2 minute scrub and put them on Craigslist for $225 and there is a guy coming over later tonight to look at them.
My neighbor is going to wake up to a really nice bottle of whiskey on his front stoop if this works out.
Edit: They're gone. Easiest Craigslist transaction ever. Guy was prompt, polite, and paid asking price.
The Bros don't watch Westerns, especially old ones. The old man loved them. He also loved screwing with people. He's been dead for 3 days.
Late last night my brother sends me a pick of his TV tuned to Prime. Remember, they not once have watched ANY westerns. Prime's Recommended Movies turns up Robert Redford's Jeremiah Johnson, one of our dad's favorite movies.
He's still screwing with us.
Rental company finally came through on clearing out the downstairs storage cages after a little gentle prodding. They're long time acquaintances/friends. So today I put together this.
also a computer desk/table that was damaged in transit but otherwise new. Then I started taking some tools and stuff out of the rental garage.
It's 5ft by let's say 8-10ish ft and right there so no excuses once I'm set up for doing some tasks.
The shelving unit was bitch to put up by myself but I might buy another. I really don't like the link system they use but it goes together eventually.
Happy happy. It's the little things for me.
oh yeah Lyft approved me overnite to drive initially with 'Express' where I rent a car through them. I'm now gonna take a good look at financing a Versa or maybe even the $4k Sentra I found on CarGurus. The Sentra has 2012 so limited eligibility left but 'start small finish big' hopefully.
Came home from physical therapy today and apparently my father in laws love of LED lighting has spread too my basement. Its glorious except now I realize I really need to sweep the floor.
It was sauerbraten night at the grocery store. No one eats it but and my father and me so I haven’t made it in years. It’s not as good as homemade but it’s not bad.
In reply to Wally :
I don't know what sauerbraten are, but I know what sauerkraut is, I know what braten are, and I know enough German food to know that the more syllables the better, so now I need to sample this taste experience.

It is a pot roast. Usually beef, usually has to be marinated for a few days.

I don't have my grandmother's recipe but Alton Brown's is my favorite to make at home: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/sauerbraten-recipe-1944490 . It's fairly simple but time consuming. I like mine over homemade spaetzle with red cabbage.
It's quite a bit of food for one so I usually just make it when I have my father and uncle up to watch the Daytona 500 in February. Last year I had it marinating when my father in law passed away. I finished it and brought half to the hotel for my father. He decided he wanted some but had no way to warm it. Someone suggested he could heat up the gravy with the coffee maker assuming it was an old style with a pot and hot plate. Somehow he managed to completely clog the Keurig machine in his room with gravy.

This is one of those out of context sentences that really needs to make it into Say What?.
I have been putting off the big, king of the hill professional certification in my field for years. It's been on my radar for over a decade. There's a little more to make it official, but the hard part is the test, and I passed that this morning in about an hour.
For the past 5 years I've worked on various projects for a single customer and the one I've been working on for the past 3 years is coming to an end at the end of the year. After this week, I have 6 hours left on the contract. The company I work for is small and has been looking for something for me to do in 2019 and a few minutes ago I got a call that I will have a new project to work on starting in Jan and going through the spring of 2020. Yay. It is a great feeling to know that I will be able to stay with the company. I'll have to spend some time in the Detroit area and get to work remotely some weeks, but that is better than not working. It is like Santa came early for me!
I just helped 2 teenaged girls get their "JEEP" out of a muddy ditch. Somehow they stuffed it in the ditch at a 60 degree angle in 8" of mud. Those all seasons needed help. Used my spade to hog out the mud from behind said wheels, had them straighten the wheels and then hit it hard in reverse. Worked like a charm.
Marry Christmas, kids.
