Does anyone know about the structural strength of a targa roof, and if a roll bar would be necessary?

Which generation MR2? And what do you intend to do to/with the car that might require a roll bar?

If you're driving anything with a targa top in a way that it may end up on its roof, then yes a roll bar is necessary.

PDX/HPDE or auto-X?

A roll bar certainly isn't going to hurt on these, but they're a rather tight fit. I'd also consider taking out the roof panels - if you park it into something you probably don't want to be showered in glass particles, either.

Check with the rules of the roadcourse and events. This will tell you if a rollbar is required.
If you are asking if a rollbar is a good idea - well - of course it is. It is only the rules that will tell you if it is required.
