I tried to upload an animated GIF but all it shows is one frame. How do I get it to animate? Also how can I reduce the size and maintain the animation?

(Full disclaimer, I'm not a web guy; nor do I play one on teh interwebz. This is not advice from anybody that has authoritay)

Yes, there are dimensional limitations. As I remember, if you resize your GIF to be within the restrictions, the animation will work fine. slefain's avatar is a good example of this.

resizepic.com resized it but it lost it's animation. I had been able to resize on my puter, it was the animation I wanted to preserve.

animated gifs suck balls, so I set all my browsers to never animate them. I'll never see anything but the first frame of that oh-so-clever animation. I will, however, have a much less annoying web experience without a bunch of distracting moving crap all over.

It's is bad news for less-than-forward-thinking advertisers, though.

Oh, Great Tim, please teach me how to de-animate GIF avatars. I would be forever grateful.

People who use animated avatars think that the internet is all about them. They need to understand that it's actually all about me.

    Woody, here's Firefox: http://www.tipstrs.com/tip/14861/Turn-off-animated-GIFs-in-Firefox

Safari has a preference for it. You can also block gifs from loading altogether, which isn't a bad idea, since nobody who really knows what they're doing uses gifs for much of anything anymore. From some forum "Safari -> Block Images and Plugins -> Only Animation.

Blocking downloads gif image can be activated via the menu Safari -> Block Ad / Banners adding a filter value *. gif * (with asterisks)."

Internet Explorer: go to Internet Options < Advanced < Multimedia unselect Play animations in web pages

Chrome doesn't seem to have the ability, but I could be wrong.

As I now realize that SOME people may find my avatar OFFENSIVE, and as OFFENDING people is certainly the LAST thing I would want to do, I have been considering changing my avatar to a more Politically Correct graphic:

In all fairness, shouldn't the Toyota gun go full auto spraying bullets everywhere and kill the Toyota man too ? or perhaps it should just be the Toyota guy falling on his own sword ?

Well Tim that only means you are missing the coolest animated GIF on the forum!

Thanx Grtechguy for resizing it for me and keeping the animation.
