I was expecting the worst, but today Vienna is doing significantly better. Looks like she's coming home soon. I'm relieved, now broke, but relieved.

I can go make more $$$ - can't do that with the pup. Still not sure what it was - either bacterial infection-overload/virus is on the top of the list.

We had a lhasa who used to get bouts of vestibular syndrome. First time it happened it was the most terrifying thing we ever saw. She would shake and convulse and her eyes would dart back and forth and be almost completely unresponsive, as though she were having a massive stroke. That first time we thought we were driving her to the vet for the last time. Turns out that while the condition was unsettling, it was mostly just an inner-ear misfire that was ultimately harmless but seriously crossed her wires for an hour or two. I hope this episode turns out to be something along those lines.
And, yeah, critical vet care adds up quick. One of our parrots spent 28 days in the avian version of the ICU, getting daily surgeries to treat a massive wound from a freak infection. We could have put her up in a Hampton Inn for less per day (and gotten her the continental breakfast). When she finally did come home, she still had to go back for twice weekly, then weekly, now twice monthly evaluations to monitor her healing. The last time we were at the vet's I joked with them that for as much money as we had given them, they probably just could have just given us a fresh bird each time we came in.
But I think ultimately no one ever really regrets any cost to save or improve the life of an animal companion. They place absolute trust in us that we'll do whatever we can for them, and we reward them by justifying that trust.

Awesome news!!!! Sometimes I want to make my Siberian Husky - Bandit - into a rug or a pillow - but then I realize hes just an overactive little boy. If people had the same outlook on human little boys, Id be adorning a nice Chaise Lounge right now
Though Ive never fathered a child, I certainly am the father of a beautiful son...I completely understand and am very much elated your pup is on the mend!

Glad to hear. Yes the money adds up quick but i the end itis money well spent. We had a 4 year old pound dog that got cancer in her jaw, there was no question as to spending the money to get it taken care of. When she was 12 she flipped her stomach, 3 nights in the ICU for that. Two years later her kidney was failing (she was born with only one) and she was miserable so we did what we had to do. That day was one of the worst of my life. After we left the Vets office me, my wife, my brother and my In Laws went the Old Bag of Nails that was just down the street and had a few in her honor.
Again, very glad things are going well.

I feel for you man. My husky has sent every one of ours to the emergency vet, dunno what it is but she never gets pissy during normal buisness hours....that's being said we had one rat terrier rescue that I imagine had no less than 10k worth of vet bills over the span of his lifetime. Money well spent. He would sit under the car or in the floorboard while I worked on cars. If I was under the car so was he, not doing anything more than watching. Never failed to crack me up.

Awesome news! Glad to hear she's on the up and up. And I hear you on the broke thing, my pup had to have a $1,600 knee surgery a few months ago. It was worth it.

Our Great Pyrenees pup has had 5 knee surgeries - solid 10k dog. The dobe has only had checkups and was free - her vet doesn't even charge for her check ups. Other than crappy timing, I really don't mind. I've pissed away more on cars, businesses and random stuff over the years. To have her around, I'll happily fork it over.

Yeah. In a lot of ways they are better than kids. Unconditional love, baby. When they get sick, we just have to take care of them. When we are pissed off at the whole world, they just tell us it going to be OK. Dogs are a special gift.

I've got about a grand sunk into a ferret- that was 100$ with his brother and a cage and food and everything as a rescue from the local humane society. Sure it's a rodent, but DAMN them things are funny, and when I've having a crap day, they're the perfect medicine. Wind em up, watch em freak out, and feel better.

That's great news! When my wacky siamese ingested a length of thread which tied off his intestines like link sausages and left him with peritonitis... they didn't have a very good prognosis. $2100 later, I had a weak but recovering kitty. I'd gladly spend it again - the bank balance doesn't keep my back warm at night.

No doubt. My best ex-girlfriend lost the big goofy Shepard we both loved for 15 years. The last three were expensive, but worth it. Money doesn't get exited just because you're there.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again..it's a damn shame they don't live as long as we do.
