Listen to the Sarah MaGlocklin (ok, screwed the last name) song in the background of the adopt a pet commercial, with the animals sad faces in the cages. . It was written about a heroin addict wanting to die in a flea-bag hotel. Talk about irony. Beautiful voice and song; the back-story sucks.

I wouldn't call the Regency a fleabag hotel. I thought it was a pretty nice place. And he did die, the question is was it suicide, was it an accidental overdose, or was it deliberately done to him by Jimmy.

Some example of people not listening to the lyrics:
Lady Gaga performing Love Game on Dancing with the Stars. I dont mind that song, but I was amused by how entirely inappropriate it was for a family audience.
Aqua-Barbie Girl. That is also a very dirty song, and no one seemed to realize it when it was popular.

When Sarah McLachlan's "Surfacing" came out, one of my friends was all disappointed because the songs were so happy! "Fumbling" is pretty dark.
I've been listening to Jason Mraz's latest album - a pop singer that digs horns, yay! There's a song called "Butterfly" that's a wee bit suggestive.

I actually am VERY picky when it comes to music, specifically because of what you say. Half of the "rock" music that comes out today is explicitly about drug use, and I don't need to listen to that bullE36 M3.

I used to do most of the driving when my friends and I would go to races, and I was usually the only one who cared what we listened to so I would put a bunch of tapes together for long trips. Most of the time everyone else would sleep or read anyway. On a trip to NC, about 12 hours, I put Detachable Penis about every 8-10 songs. No one could figure out why they were humming this stupid song during the weekend.

I like instrumental music, and have just about zero interest in the lyrics, or story in a song. The voice is just another instrument to me. If it sounds good, then I like lit. I couldn't care less what it's all about.

Yup, if there happens to be something interesting/insightful/cool in the lyrics that's fine.
Nonsensical rambling but the voice is good, that works for me too.

Right there with ya! My tastes in music are wide and varied, but lyrics and back-stories have never been a make-or-break issue.
Have to admit, though, that the revelations on this thread have had me laughing and shaking my head at the same time.
