I'm going to keep my perfect record of not ever having seen one second of the telethon.

My nephew had MD. For years my brother in law hosted a Bocce tournament every year to raise money. Then he would present it with his son durning the marathon. Last year they were actually with Jerry to donate the money on national TV. My 27 year old nephew died of MD earlier this year. Somehow for me it seems fitting than Jerry retired at the same time.

That doesn't mean I don't support the cause, it just means I don't watch telethons.

I think the thing that bothered me about the telethons on Labor Day was that Jerry, the last few years, looked dead about half the way through them. I mean, he was pasty/washed out looking, and I had images of a bottle of oxygen and nurses with hypos full of adreneline(sp?) lurking just off camera range. It was beginning to look like Jerry needed the money for his own hospital bills.

My wife has been a big supporter of his cause because two childhood friends (a brother and sister) had MD. Both are still alive. Wife used to attend an MD camp to help and she has watched the telethon most years. Best telethon ever was when Dean Martin came on at the goading of Frank Sinatra.

Details are sketchy, but every indication is that this was not an amicable split.

I always admired his charity, his comedy - not so much.

Jerry's really sick. Friend of mine who freelances would go up and do camera for the telethon every year. Won't go into details, but integraguy's closer to the mark than you think (except for the taking the money himself part). What I'm hearing is that Jerry still wanted to do them, but the Foundation is having nightmares about Jerry passing out on-air.

Rock on MD supporters, cheering for ya, even though my own cause is MS (best ex-girlfiend's got it).

EDIT: and now childhood cancer, I guess.

Jerry has been sick for years. Its no secret. Several years ago he took steroids for fibrosis of the lungs and got a real case of the moon face. Smoking hasn't helped. I'm surprised he has lived this long. When I was a youngster I loved the made in the 60s, post Martin and Lewis. Seeing the stuff he made with Martin is silly.
