That was pretty sloppy on my part; I guess the point I'd try to make is that while people did/do aspire to royalty, they don't normally get there because anybody else wants them there (outside of Machiavellian chess), but because they bought/stole/stabbed their way there. As a result, it's not a tradition I hold in the highest esteem. Come to think of it, if British television is any indication, it's not a tradition always held in the highest esteem by places that famously still have a monarchy...
I'm also not a giant fan of high school popularity contests, which I freely admit is a personal bias. That is, I really don't think they're a good idea, but I am willing to recognize that they may not be as toxic as they appear to me to be.
Also, bonus points to Giant Purple Snorklewacker for bringing King Arthur, and better yet, Monty Python into the thread!
"What is the ground speed of an unladen Miata?" "U.S. or European spec?" "What? I, uh, aaaaaaaaaaiiigh......"

Amazing, the voting of a King and Queen has somehow come be seen as somewhat out dated...
By the way:
NO BODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!!!
I bet you didn't expect that eh?

better the rack than the comfy chair
Ximinez [with a cruel leer]: Now -- you will stay in the Comfy Chair until lunch time, with only a cup of coffee at eleven. [aside, to Biggles] Is that really all it is?
Biggles: Yes, lord.
Ximinez: I see. I suppose we make it worse by shouting a lot, do we? Confess, woman. Confess! Confess! Confess! Confess
Biggles: I confess!
Ximinez: Not you!

So let me get this straight. This person is known as a guy, identifies himself as a male, and is voted King.
And people get pissed off?
Why does the school think it is any of their darned business to get in this person's pants in the first place?
I would call myself a republican if more republicans thought this way! Do what you will, as long as no one gets hurt!
Joey
(sigh) I am not a Republican.
I never have been.
I didn't mean you necessarily were... I was just saying that that was a more traditional republican view, rather than the more current republican way of legislating all this morality.

so let's say there's one guy that is into chess / debate / dungeons and dragons / whatever the jocks are not into, and the jocks get enough votes to make that guy the queen, or the non-gender-specific matriarch, or whatever they're going to call it. does he have to slow-dance with the quarterback, and if so, what happens if they both throw wood?
I don't know? What happened?

Im not sure where any of this is going, but my senior year, the prom king was the Janitor (guy was awesome....he carried around one of those big gallon sized insulated mugs all day, and we all were pretty sure it was full of long island iced tea...). the guy was missing a good deal of his dentistry, and claimed it was because chocolate is bad for your teeth, and he frequently dined on ...ahem...chocolate err uh...Costas. Anyway, he won as king, and his queen was the ride-on floor buffer that resembled a power wheels version of a Zamboni, which had been decorated with all sorts of school colored crepe paper and such. it was great. All the parents were pissed. Shutup soccermoms...go drive a van somewhere in rage.

Approaching Greatness. Kudos, big time, to the principal for not mucking up the works and letting you guys do it.
