One of the most under-rated bands of the era in my opinion. No idea about what the song means though.

    I love that song.

No sugar tonight in my coffee

No sugar tonight in my tea

no sugar to stand beside me

no sugar to run with me

forgive me if I am wrong with the lyrics....that is from memory

I thought it was a song about life without SWMBO

    Yes, excellent band.

The song? It's about this guy, see, and he's got, like, no sugar. Tonight.

We all know they went on to become Bachman-Turner Overdrive, right? Definitely one of the fattest bands in rock and roll, if not one of the most underrated.

I know this one from listening to Vinyl Tap, Randy Bachman's radio show on CBC. A quick Google search turned up the story he related:

John Presho, who knew Randy Bachman and worked security for his band Bachman-Turner Overdrive, gives this account: "Randy told me that the inspiration for writing 'No Sugar Tonight' came to him from an experience he had walking in downtown Berkeley, California. Randy was walking and talking with a band mate when he looked up and saw 4 big biker guys walking on the same sidewalk approaching them. Randy made up his mind to cross the street rather than confront the bikers, then he heard the skidding of car tires.

Just as Randy was stepping off the sidewalk the car came to a skidding stop and a biker lady got out of the car, walked over to one of the bikers and engaged in a heated conversation with him. When the argument ended the biker lady walked back to the car, opened the door, turned around, then shouted to the biker, 'One more thing honey, you're not getting any sugar tonight' indicating he was not going to get any sex that night from her. The car took off, Randy crossed the street went back to his hotel and started writing the song based on that experience.

Randy Bachman wrote that song while the Guess Who was in England. He wandered around all the time when they toured, going to record stores, music shops, looking for guitars... One evening he was trying to avoid some young toughs who appeared like they might be about to rob him when a young woman came to a stop in her car and proceeded to dress down one of the toughs about always leaving her alone at home, and going out with his worthlesss friends- you know, nothing we haven't all heard.. Anyway, the last thing he heard as the thoroughly cowed tough guy got in the passengers seat was "And you ain't gettin no sugar tonight, either!"

    Or something like that.

Not quite. BTO didn't have Burton Cummings. That would be akin to saying the Beatles went on to become Wings.
