    You are going to hate life. 17 slows down during rush hours, and the tunnel will probably bring you to tears, unless your home and work are really that unbearable.

    +1 to what TJ said. If you are going to work in Norfolk, live in Norfolk, VA Beach, Chesapeake, or even Suffolk and Smithfield. I'm not a huge fan of Portsmouth though, most ignorantly laid out roads ever, and are for the most part in very poor condition as well. Not that Norfolk's roads are that much better.

    commuting is a bi-atch there. I'd suggest you do some homework on traffic flows from your proposed house to work.

    Keep in mind..Norfolk is an up and coming town. It's showing up Richmond for culture and live music. The restaurants and bars near the water front and in Ghent are really nice and lively due to ODU being there.

    i work in newport news which is on the other side of the water, but i live in gloucester which is a little bit further from norfolk. Norfolk is a pretty fun place but there's some pretty bad parts as with any city. definitely avoid portsmouth though lol. and definitely dont try commuting across the water (from hampton or newport news), the bridge/tunnel traffic is ridiculous at all hours of the day, especially rush hour.
