gamby and bluej have motivated me, so i registered for the 2011 Mid-Michigan BikeMS ride, which takes place 16 - 17 Jul.

this event is mostly flat, and i'm doing the 100-mile option each day. last year, on saturday i set my personal best ride time at 6 hrs 13 minutes, then on sunday i lowered my personal best to 6 hrs 9 minutes. one of my friends told me he will double his regular contribution if i can break the 6 hour barrier, but he doesn't do the ride so i might just lie to him.

anyway, if you want to read my story (and keep up with the blog i'll start after my trail ride this afternoon), you can find it here:

    thanks! PC

yesterday i hit the local all-you-can-eat Indian buffet for lunch, nearly passed out in my office around 2PM, then found that tandoori chicken is actually a great pre-ride fuel for MtBiking. set my best time of the year at Maybury. i'm riding with a new bunch of guys this year and i'm mid-pack at best. the fast guys drop me like a bad habit on every ride. still, training is going well and i'll definitely be ready for the 200-mile weekend July 16 - 17.

100 miles on Saturday, 100 miles on Sunday. it's not as bad as it sounds, but i probably won't ride to work on Monday.

figure an average of 90 crank rpm for 6.25 hours of ride time each day for a total of 90 x 60 x 6.25 x 2 = 67,500 strokes per leg over the weekend. i'm more worried about my taint than my legs.

    SPECIAL OFFER FOR GRM'ers:

    1. hit me with a donation at the link above
    2. include a personal note with the artist and title of the song of your choice
    3. i will download it and put it on my iPod

i will ride with the iPod on shuffle, and when your song comes on, no matter where i am on the road or who i'm riding with at the time, i will jump out of the saddle and stomp the pedals as hard as i can while shouting the lyrics to your song at the top of my lungs.*

last year, i think i scared a couple of people when DILYSI Dave's song came on. i was third in a line of 5 when i jumped out of line and busted into the fullest sprint i could muster, shouting

WITH KARATE I'LL KICK YOUR ASS FROM HERE TO RIGHT OVER THERE OH YEAH MOTHERberkeleyER I'M GONNA KICK YOUR berkeleying DERRIERE YEAHEEYEAH YOU BROKE THE RULES AND NOW I'LL PULL ALL OF YOUR PUBIC HAIR you motherberkeleyer

    *for about 30 seconds

so while i'm not totally ready, i'm certainly getting there.

i drove in the chumpcar event at beaverun last weekend instead of training, so i'm as ready as i'm going to be but probably not ready enough. packing my bag and loading the car tonight, leaving the house at 5:30 tomorrow morning, should be on the bike by 7:00 AM. there's still time to contribute at

    AngryCorvair's BikeMS 2011 Page

i'm still going to try to break 6 hours on Sunday.

As I type this, you're out-cold from Day 1's ride.

Looking forward to the tales from the ride.

Angry and all who are riding. Please allow me to extend the most sincere and humble THANK YOU I can muster.
My dad was diagnosed with MS in 1987 (IIRC). The last time he stood under his own power was for my wedding picture in 1997. He's been bed-ridden for 11 years and spent most of March, all of April, May, June, and up until last week in the hospital. MS is a SOB and it's been killer to watch my dad, my hero go from superman to a 6-foot tall 93 pound man that can barely feed himself. Crap, I'm tearing up now. Anyway, I know any advances that might be made tomorrow are way to late for him, but god forbid my kids are diagnosed.....
I've ridden for MS before, now the time I have for volunteering is spent giving my mom a break and talking to my dad about cars.

Thank you for overextending yourself and doing what you can do to help others.

I've said before--from what I've seen, the people who are close to someone with MS are able to raise a lot more money than those who aren't. I concluded this year that I''ll be doing this ride for quite some time.

After raising so much this year, I REALLY am obliged to do it again next year.

I hope AC checks in before he hits the hay tonight. Then again, I'll expect an e-mail from him.

I hope it went well, my friend.

my kids jumped me the moment i got home yesterday evening so i couldn't get to the computer until now.

DrBoost, i'm sorry to hear about your dad. MS is a motherberkeleyer.

so here is my quick and dirty summary. i'll add details as i can remember them.

2011 marks the fifth time I've ridden in the Mid Michigan Bike MS bicycle ride to raise funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. It is a two-day ride with 60-, 75-, and 100-mile routes available each day, and because I'm a glutton for punishment I choose the 100-mile option each day. The ride starts Saturday at Lake Fenton High School and ends at Michigan State University, then on Sunday we reverse the route. Last year, on Saturday I completed the century in 6 hours 12 minutes and some number of seconds that I don't remember, which was my personal best. Then the next day I surprised myself by completing the second century in 6 hours 9 minutes. This year, one of my generous contributors offered me a challenge: Break the six-hour mark and he'd double his contribution. Now, if we were talking about going from ten bucks to twenty, I probably wouldn't make the effort, but the stakes were much higher than that.

So, at 7:45 AM on Saturday 16 Jul 2011, after chugging a cup of coffee and chowing down a Sausage Egg and Cheese McGriddle (possibly the best breakfast sandwich ever), I saddled up and hit the road, on a quest to shave nearly 10 minutes off my previous best. Equipped with an epic iPod playlist that included Barry White, Black Sabbath, Primus, and John Hiatt, I felt like there was nothing that could stop me from reaching my goal.

Turns out I was right! I covered the route in a new personal best of 5 hours 55 minutes 11 seconds (rest stops not included). I did not have to fight a headwind, but with the ambient temperature nearing 90 F, I went through a lot of water and Gatorade on the road. Took a shower, got a massage, and ate a gigantic dinner at the Shaw dining hall at MSU, then went out for another dinner with a friend from elementary school who lives near MSU. Mmmm, B-Dubs chicken tenders.

Sunday, I had a little tougher time on the road. I took it pretty easy for the first several miles. Then, at the rest stop about 17 miles from the start I ran into a guy I rode with last year. I joined up with him and another guy and we picked up the pace a bit, about 18 mph. When we were caught by a group of four a few minutes later, we latched on with them and picked it up some more. Like 20 mph average for the next 90 minutes. I knew I was in trouble when I noticed that I felt hungry, but we were only a few miles from the next rest area so I kept hammering with them until we got there. Then I ate everything I could get my hands on, drank a 24-oz bottle of Gatorade, and was unable to get my legs moving when they were ready to hit the road again. When they pulled out at an "easy" 15 mph, I couldn't stay with them. I dropped back to 12 mph and watched them disappear. Ugh. The next 18 miles seemed to take a lot longer than the 1:16 that my ride clock said it took, and when I hit the lunch stop at 4:01 I didn't think I could finish the second day in under six hours. The guys I rode the fast segment with were still there, and they waited for me as I cooled off and ate a peanut butter and banana sandwich that would have satisfied The King himself. I told them that I couldn't possibly keep up with their pace, but they insisted that they would follow me and let me dictate the pace for the first couple miles, then I could drop into the draft and they'd pull me the rest of the way. Somehow I was able to roll out at 14 mph, then 15, then 16, and felt pretty good when I dropped off the front. Thanks to the effectiveness of the draft with a seven-man pace line, we rolled along at about 17 mph for the next 13 miles. Unfortunately the next rest stop was not at 13 miles, and I fell off the back of the group. Again. I met them at the next rest area, where one guy suggested I drink a Mountain Dew. So I did. But with the ride clock showing 5:13 with 15.2 miles to go, I knew a six-hour finish was out of the question.

Until the twelve ounces of pure monkey adrenaline mis-labeled as Mountain Dew kicked in.

I covered those last 15.2 miles in 51 minutes, for a total ride time of 6:04:37. I was bummed that I didn't go sub-six on Day 2, but realized that the 6:04 was still five minutes faster than last year's best time. And then I had to wonder: What if I had TWO Mountain Dews? So I guess I'll try that next year. ;-)

    You probably would have vomited.

The dreaded bonk. That was the one announcement I remembered from before the start of this year's ride--the dude said very clearly "DON'T LET YOURSELF GET HUNGRY!!!"

Killer pace at the beginning, though. Hell, killer pace overall. A very admirable ride for a double century--especially for day 2.

    Congrats and massive props. Bravo.

Together, we've given the National MS Society a decent chunk of change this year. Pretty cool.

Thanks! Not bad for an old man, I suppose. Total climbing on my route is less than 1000 feet. You probably do that much on just one hill.

    bump!

We leave tomorrow for upstate NY and the beautiful finger lakes. here's the saturday ride route: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/41511056 I'm doing the sunday 50 miler as well. First time attempting the back to back rides. AC, my hat really is off to you for the back to back centuries, that's some serious stuff. my brother has just gotten into riding and has been training hard for saturdays century. it'll be my first time riding with him and I'm really looking forward to it.

our team has done pretty well on the fundraising front. we're on track to break $8k with about 12 people. here's a link to my page: http://main.nationalmssociety.org/site/TR/Bike/NYRBikeEvents?px=4371189&pg=per... one of the things I really like about the way the NMSS is set up is that the money raised by each chapter goes through them first, then on to other national programs rather than the other way around for a lot of charities. this means that when you donate to the chapter where you know someone, you know the money will be used to support them and their community first.

I don't listen to music while i ride but i did agree to post a video to youtube on the proper methodology to using and applying butt butt'r (pg13) if collectively I get to the $1k mark. long story but basically some friends found it hilarious that i actually gave a how-to on the proper method on another forum and I told them i'd make a publicly embarrassing vid if they all chipped in.

our custom jerseys arrived today as well, will post a pic after the ride. for ~$40 each, they rock!
