I believe he has more than one. His first one (or at least the first incarnation of it) was powered by a 5.0 out of a Fox body.

Yes, Mr. Newman is a class act at all times. I wish him peace at the end of a full life.

My mother agreed to name me Paul because of him...

Now that's it is near the end, my only issue is that he's not using his influence to increase awareness for lung cancer. (We have a lung cancer foundation http://www.mewhiney.org).

A guy like that could help a lot more people and guarantee a good seat when he goes.

Dude, they guy raised over a BILLION dollars with his charitable foundation. Believe me, his seat is front and center already.

There's no reason to exploit his last days. The man has been in the public eye since the early fifties. Let him play out the string privately, quietly or any way he wishes.

eerie coincidence that i'm listening to "Leper Messiah" as i read this thread.

Send me money, send me green, Heaven you will meet. Make a contribution and you'll get a better seat.

That comment wasn't concerning raising money, more awareness. Most people don't even know what kind of cancer he has.

I always thought that this was a classy, effective way of conveying that message:

I have a ton of issues with the American Cancer Society (concerning how they handle lung cancer).

Because it's none of their damn business.

We get it. You've got some sort of bug up your butt because some loved one of yours died of lung cancer. Guess what; lots of other people have loved ones who have died of that and all sorts of other terrible diseases. That doesn't give you, me, or anybody else the right to misappropriate people's lives, illnesses, or deaths, whether they're famous or not.

If I found out I had a few months to live, I can guarantee you that I wouldn't be doing anything other than spending as much time as I could with my close friends and family. Why should he be any different?

I don't have much to add here that hasn't already been said elsewhere, but one thing about Paul Newman is how diverse his fan base is in years. Everyone likes the guy. Be it a 20 year old or 100 year old... I think that says it all.

Here is one of my favourite tv segments and is fitting to the topic.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Bv4y7o6BFs

The guy is dying and, from what we've read and seen, spent his life being a very kind person. Let him die how he wants. My opinion is that he's deserved it. He did a lot of good for other people while he could've been doing something else. He's earned this time to be private and make his own peace. He's a famous man and accepted the lack of privacy that comes along with that. Now I hope he can be left alone to prepare for his next journey.

This isn't a slam no your ideas or opinion on the matter. Just an alternative viewpoint. Another person, besides PN, might go out and evangelize till the bitter end. He's chosen a different route. One that I think is very understandable.

You're right. That comment was over the top. For that I apologize.

However, I stand by every other word in that post, the point of which was that Paul Newman owes nobody anything with regard to any form of do-gooding. If you seriously think less of him because he's chosen to live out his last days quietly and privately, then perhaps you're the shiny happy person.

I regret now not being able to tell Mr. Newman that he was the inspiration for me to go racing.

I love the answer he gave when interviewed by James Lipton on "Inside the Actors Studio" Lipton asked "What is your favorite noise or sound"? Newman hesitated a second and said.." a V-8" Then he grinned, you know the one...God Bless PLN.

Paul Newman is a true man's man.

Great actor, a racer, a benefactor--we should all be so cool.

That's incorrect ....... his first Volvo wagon was powered by a Buick Grand National motor built by a company named HESCO out of Birmingham Alabama. My prayers to Mr Paul Newman and his family.

This is what wagon looks now with the updated wheels

This is how the wagon looked when Paul Newman owned it.

I can't say as his acting ever appealed to me, but what he has done with his driving talent and money I must agree with. Go NHL racing! Hiring Graham Rahal may have been the single greatest thing they could have done in my mind.

PLN is truly a role model for the world. His self-depreciating sense of humor is amazing. I remember one story I heard him tell about when he and Jim Fitzgerald were driving for Bob Sharp's 280 ZX Turbo team in Trans-Am. At this time Paul and Fitz were both somewhere around 60, so they had the bright idea that Geritol would be an ideal sponsor. They made the pitch, but were rejected as being too old for Geritol's target audience!

If we want to fix what is screwed up in the world, a big first step would be to get as many people as possible to live their lives like Paul - with honesty, honor, and a sense of what's right - as well as with a sense of humor, a sense of one's true place in the world, and true humility. Leave the world a better place through your efforts. I'm really glad he had the opportunity for a last track day, and wish him Godspeed. He leaves big, big shoes to fill. He's a great actor, a great racer, and a really great human being!

And as far as his driving talent is concerned - his name is on the SCCA's President's Cup alongside Mark Donohue and Bobby Rahal for a reason - he earned it!
