Students suspended for skipping school to grab free Denny's breakfast

WEST WARWICK, R.I. (AP) -- Dozens of students from a Rhode Island high school who skipped classes for a free Grand Slam breakfast at Denny's got slammed with suspensions instead.

Officials at West Warwick High School tell The Providence Journal that 46 students went to Denny's in Warwick on Feb. 9 to take advantage of the free breakfast advertised during the Super Bowl.

Assistant Principal Paula Santos got wind of the outing and drove to the restaurant to tell the students to go to school. Principal Karen Tarasevich says students who immediately went back were dismissed with a suspension mark on their records. Those who didn't return got two-day suspensions.

Tarasevich says she cracked down because in a similar prank last year, one student was involved in a car crash as he returned to school.

She cracked down because of a crash on the way back next year? It's not like they were skipping school to get drunk, it seems like an accident is unrelated to the fact that they were getting free breakfast.

Kinda like sending a kid to their room that has TV, video games, a computer, toys etc when they are in trouble.

Hell at my high school I got in trouble once, I didn't get suspended I got to do manual labor!

I used to fight a lot as a kid. I really loved it. But after my first fight in high school, I got suspended for a week. It got pretty lonely and boring at home after the first day or so.

Of course, on Friday, my father came home from work early and took me to the new car expo in Hartford. I still have the brochures.

This is a prime example of why educators shouldn't be allowed to run anything, especially schools.

Before you flame me, mrsbilly3, M.Ed. agrees with me on that point.

At my high school you were allowed X number of absences and Y number of late arrivals before something bad happened ( I don't remember the details). Anyway, toward the end of senior year I had gotten to Y late arrivals. The next time I was late - time to skip! Skipping the whole day got me less penalty that letting me walk in 5 minutes late. I'm not sure who decided that was the way to do it.
