    http://www.kare11.com/news/article/944063/391/Woman-jailed-for-funneling-money-to-...

Synopsis for those who don't feel like clicking? Minnesota based Somalian immigrant woman decides instead of playing nice in her new home, she's gonna take a bunch of cash and funnel it back to some terrorists. She gets caught, and is in jail. Like the rest of the state, they ban headwear for inmates.

    My take on it?

You pretty much lost your rights in my eyes when you decided to line up with terrorists. I figure if you're going to come here and start some shenanigans, you had better be ready to deal with the result, whatever the case may be. I hope she doesn't get granted her right to it, because (assuming she's guilty) you were obviously conspiring to deprive the rights of others through terrorism, and got caught- you deserve exactly the level of freedom you were hoping to give to others. If you want to come here and hang out and get a job and be a contributing member to society, awesome. Welcome aboard. If you wanna come here, try and act all sour, get busted and THEN demand the rights that a constitution that you probably won't EVER agree to, no dice.

    Doesn't like jail, not eating.

    I don't see a problem here.

Kinda funny arguing for rights they'd readily deny others. Do other religions have rights under hardline Islam? No. Then quit whining when the shoes on the other foot.

It's a women's prison. Aren't all of the guards female? My understanding is that hijab requirements are really only for when you will be in front of men who are not your husband or immediate family. She's not exactly "going out in public".

Non-story. No, you can't have your headwear in jail. Jail rules trump religious dictates.

As long as she's not being deprived of the headwear while her cellmate's sporting a cross necklace or a habit, I don't see a problem.

She's been pretty uncooperative through the whole process - during the trial she got slapped with contempt of court for not standing when the judge entered the room. She said it was against her religion even though several tribal elders had advised her it was not. After this went on for several days and the judge threw in a few extra days of jail for each instance, she decided that maybe it was okay to stand for him.

I'm not sure how there could be a problem here. The policy isn't denying her any rights and it isn't targeting her or Islam specifically.

Prison is by definition a loss of freedoms. Doesn't even seem like news to me.

...except that it sounds great in the anti-US propaganda machine: "Evil US jailers deny Muslim heroine the right to follow her Allah-given religious practices!"

I say let her wear the headgear, and watch her fellow inmates sort it out for her.

Interesting proposition. I know they don't like rapists and pedos in prison, how about identified terrorist conspirators?

    In reply to Duke:

It doesn't read all that slanted. The headline points out she was jailed for sending money to terrorists, and the body begins AND ends with the observation that she was convicted of this crime. The part in the middle is pretty matter of fact.

I just don't see your anti-US propaganda machine at work in this particular article.

Moreover, it seems like folks who vary at least a bit in other political threads read this article and all arrived at a "yeah, that sounds about right" sort of conclusion of non-news.

To your last point, do you think her fellow inmates don't already know, even without the headgear?

Oh, I didn't mean this particular article was slanted - I just meant that this "event" was a perfect opportunity to be trumped into yet another reason why The Great Satan must be destroyed.

I ain't defending this woman's particular actions, nor saying her rights are being violated per se, but you trust the government to define terrorist however they like and define human rights however they like?

It'd be pretty easy to say the same sort of thing about any number of organizations or belief systems. Supreme court says the constitution protects my right to an abortion. You give money to some group that commits some crime at an abortion clinic. The government calls it terrorism. Constitutional protections stop applying to you after you're convicted. You see where this goes?

What makes us better, at least on paper before all this bullE36 M3 anti-terrorism stuff, is that we extend our protections to people we all agree are shiny happy people. Almost no one else does that. Yeah, you lose some of those rights in jail, but we should be VERY reluctant to do even that.

And MN is the single biggest Somalian community in the WORLD, aside from Somalia. From what i've been told, it's the ease of access to benefits/health care, and the liberal attitude towards different lifestyles. I'm wondering what that'll do once they change the laws the 1st of the year.... if you are not a US citizen, no more medicaid for you, at least here. I suspect we'll see a drop in population.

I've seen a lot of this first hand. I believe in everyones right to be who they want to be. I've also seen some of the (what i'd call) ridiculous demands the Somali community has made in the name of "civil rights". My personal favorite was the mess with Target, where they were set to sue for unfair labor practices because Target wanted them to handle bacon if a customer chose to purchase it. IE scan it and put it in a bag. Somalians said no- Target said peace out y'all. Somalians sue, Target laughs. Somalians quietly go back to scanning bacon. I seem to see this along those lines.

    That's amusing...mmmm bacon.

  • Oct. 27, 2011 4:01 p.m. mndsm SuperDork

Yeah. If you don't wanna touch the bacon, go someplace where they don't sell bacon. Personally, Ima buy all the bacon I can. Thank god MN is an at-will state, and that whole mess got shot down with the quickness. I'd be afraid of the precedent it would set.

This makes way too much sense to stand up in a court.
