Helping a co-worker change the headgasket on his 92 Protege DX (1.8L 16-valve SOHC) and we can't seem to find headbolts for it.

I've found tons of info on how to swap in a DOHC motor, but he just needs his commuter back as he's got a street bike and three rambunctious young boys to get his excitement.

So, since I'm new to the whole B-series Mazda motor thing, I'm wondering if the DOHC bolts are the same as the SOHC bolts?

Do you really need to replace the bolts or can they be used twice?

    TIA

The DOHC ones can be used multiple times. Never worked on a SOHC, but I'd be amazed if they were different.

Thanks, that helps. Since he has to take the head in to be checked, I'll have him look at prices and availability at NAPA.

    Thanks!

I just re-used the ones in my 323. Don't they have to be "stretch bolts" to be replaced? Whatever that means?

    Yeah, Torque-to-Yield bolts.
