I tried to buy one at the local hardware store, but they don't carry anything..
What I'm looking for is a air purifier, preferably HEPA, now that I spend 8+ hours a day cohabitating with our cats in the basement. It's making me mighty itchy.
Anyone have any experience? I trust you guys more than the Amazon reviews :)

I have one of theses.. looks like the prices have gone nuts lately. I think I paid $150.. Anyways.. its loud, but reliable and my allergies are better when I run it. Dead simple machine.. motor, rotary switch.. BIG EXPENSIVE FILTER..
Subscribing for interest.
Thanks for the info on the one, FbC!
How finished is the basement? I've often just duct taped a furnace filter to a box fan when doing really dusty construction work. I think a slightly more polished version of that could do a good job filtering air well if there's a way that would fit into your basement esthetic. Three angle brackets riveted to the intake side of a 24" box fan and a 24" HEPA furnace filter and you've got an easily changeable reasonably cheap filter. The hepa 24" square filters are about $7/ea.
