The more things change, the more they stay the same.

    Or,

Those who do not learn their history are doomed to repeat it.

    Or,

Those who have learned history can repeat it to their advantage.

I guess we will watch the work of Gorbachev, Reagan and Thatcher disassemble itself.

    or Russia 2008 = Russia 1978

Russia and Georgia hate each other with a passion and with Georgia wanting to join NATO, Russia's been itching for a reason to go fight them. I don't know what Georgia thinks its doing because it basically intiated hostilities (the breakaway state of South Ossetia was ostensibly independent (think Kosovo) and they'd just completed a truce of sorts with the seperatists (who are mostly Russian), so this was probably a gamble by Georgia to reoccupy while hoping nobody was looking. And now Russia has its reason. Sigh The world continues its ludicrous cycle and war and death.

I heard mention in the opening ceremony of the Olympics last night that Putin (who was sitting there), of course, knew about what was happening in GA, but the Russian Olympians did not- They've blacked out the media at the games.

isn't part of the olypics about peace and unity, even during times of "conflict"?

I don't get it. Are you saying we get peace and unity by blacking out the media?

I thought that was called censorship, not peace and unity.

I didn't mean it as condoning censorship, and I admit I could have used better wording.

I was just trying to say something about the "spirit of the games"

They're trying to reclaim a portion of Georgia that has Russian nationals in it that speak Russian, use Russian money, and have Russian passports.

Alsace-Lorraine is to Germany as Georgia is to Russia. I completely agree with this thread's title.

Then again, it may be an infantile attempt to steal international attention away from China on the part of Russia. Seems like an awfully hard way to do it.

Heard an amusing clip from a speech, regarding this conflict, that Bush's speech writer needs to be smacked upside the head for:

"This war is threatening regional peace."

I'm not saying you're incorrect, however, I read that the Russian government was giving Russian passports to South Ossetians that wanted them, to make them Russian citizens. So Moscows claim they are protecting Russian nationals is very weak.

I think the reason the Russians have invaded Georgia is all too clear: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7556215.stm

How about Cheney scolding them for how this was an unprovoked attack?

Yeah, poor, innocent Iraq. Never did a thing to bother or provoke anyone.

Iraq has a less provocative history towards the U.S. than Georgian and Russia have with each other.
