did we really have to derail this conversation into religion?

I think until we can find reliable data that life actually exists elsewhere, there's no point in assuming that it exists based on statistical calculations. Even if it does exist elsewhere, it is probably functionally impossible to even communicate unless we can figure out a way to move anything at a rate comfortably faster than light.

I mean that in the sense that we should assume that this is our only place to live unless something else is found, not in the sense that we should give up SETI type efforts or space exploration.

I daily-drive a 38-MPG Toyota Corolla so that there is more fuel available for me to burn in my 400+-horsepower Mustang. Does that count as conservation?

I agree, but I'd like to add my 2 cents. Its the pursuit of that knowledge that is so fascinating to me. Sure, all we can do is sit in our laboratories and crunch numbers and guess on the reality, but without that foundation we can't interpret new data as it comes to light.

Even if the knowledge provides no benefit, the pursuit does (IMO).

I recycle old cars instead of buying new ones. Then I put a 400-hp diesel in them and get 30 mpg. Not to mention it gets me laid WAY more than a corolla would.

My Mustang doesn't get me laid, either.
