Speaking of plots (from the Kim Jong II is dead thread) has anyone seen the new Sherlock Holmes movie?

Unlike so many sequels they haven't (over)reached themselves trying to make it newer and better just for the sake of being different and have actually made it more of a continuation of the story and it's very good.

Lots of funny parts and the usual slightly over the top, as most of those books were written, scenes, like the machine gun on a train, that really are more like little boy fantasies and not to be taken too seriously, but still make you say Cool!.

But speaking of plot lines the plot here, while set back before WW1, reads like 2008. You can make a lot of money if you know in advance how you are going to stir (mess) things up.

I haven't seen it yet, but my son did last night. He loved it!

I really liked the last one. My mom, a life long Holmes fan, wasn't crazy about the last one. From what my son said, this one may be even better than the last. Hope mom gives it a chance. Bacon (my son) said that in this one Holmes actually figures things out. Ah. Elementary, my dear Watson.

I hated the first one. Not Sherlock Holmes... at all.

I hated how they were amazed by a radio switch (which was invented about the time the Sherlock Holmes stories were being written.), but acted like a magnetic force field that can deflect lead (which does not exist today) was not something crazy.

I love watching Sherlock Holmes movies, specifically where he acts like an ass.

I just power watched 7 seasons of house (24 episodes each at 1 hour long) over the past month for the same reason, and House is basically a Sherlock doctor.

I'm also a life long Holmes fan and was really disappointed with the movie and I rate Robert Downey Jr very highly.

I suggest for those who want to see a better character portrayal of Holmes then seek out Basil Rathbone's versions, you will not be disappointed especially with Dr Watson played by Nigel "outstanding Holmes!" Bruce ... you will be amazed at how a story can grip you rather than special effects.

Anyone seen the first season of Sherlock on the BBC? Amazing show. Written by Steven Moffat, the same guy that is now lead writer on Doctor Who.

It actually is set in modern day, but it's such a good show.

I also like the movies though.

    Salanis:

last night I watched an episode of Voyage to the bottom of the Sea in which a Middle Eastern madman had invented a megnetic beam so powerful it pulled American U-2 aircraft out of the sky...yet somehow, it didn't affect anyone's brains or bodily functions when they walked near the generator.

I guess movie and tv producers count on ALL the audience being completely ignorant of common scientific therories.

    In reply to Maroon92:

Yeah, it's rather excellent. That actor (Sherlock) was offered the role of The Doctor, actually, before Matt Smith was decided upon. Something like that.

I believe the new season is out shortly, too.

    I absolutely love that show.

    The new movie was ok.

The actor's name is Benedict Cumberbatch.

How cool of a name is that?

Take a deep breath and remind yourself that it's a movie.

    You'll be alright.

Enjoyed that show too. I really liked how they portrayed Holmes and Watson in it (as opposed to in the latest movies). Only one thing bugged me about the writing. Several times, I figured out what was going on before Holmes did (e.g. "Well, he's a cabby, duh."). Holmes should not take that long to figure out fairly simple puzzles.

I saw it last night. I had not seen the first one but the girlfriend liked it. I thought it was fun. A little "spectacular" and such...but that can be fun.

I take movie-watching with a ver simple principle: Expect crap. As a result, usually, I'm pleasantly surprised.

If someone starts to tell me how good a movie is...I stop them or leave the room. I want to expect crap. Lol.

I was annoyed at how they bastardized Conan Doyle as well. haven't even watched the movies because the ads killed them for me.

I enjoyed the first movie, but found it difficult to see- may have been a bad bulb in the projector, difficult to follow, and difficult to understand the accents.

And Jeremy Brett is king of the Holmeses.

If you're talking about the Sherlock Holmes movie starring Robert Downey Jr. - I saw it . What a crock ! No doubt Arthur Conan Doyle, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are all spinning in there respective graves ! Another example of Hollywood rewriting history.

    Had to say it !!!

While I haven't seen the new Holmes movies, I am also a fan of the Jeremy Brett series, and I spent a good portion of my youth watching the original 40's versions. For one, the Brett versions made Watson much less the idiot he was in the Rathbone versions.

Inspired by this thread, I watched some old black and white sherlock holmes last night. I actually preferred it to the current crop of Sherlock Holmes, Action Hero flicks (saw the last one but not the most recent one)
