My theory:
For an amateur, do what's going to taste good coming up. In which case, Mind Erasers are the answer. I feel a little bad knowing how many people I've introduced to these.
Layered in a glass, bottom to top:
1 part Kahlua, 2 parts Vodka, 1 part Club Soda
Drink with a straw (in one big shot.) Kahlua eases you into the vodka, which you never even taste, club soda chases the vodka. Tastes kinda like carbonated chocolate milk. Careful, they'll sneak up on you.

heres one to keep in your back pocket:
the blue wave
it consists of two shots, and is best done in a crowded bar. one can be any kind of blue shot, the other, water.
have the subject yell out to the bar "gimme the blue!" and the bartender hands them the blue shot, then they yell "gimme the wave!" and the bartender throws the water on them.
always entertaining for everyone but the vict... err, subject.
