I was bored in traffic today, and I had a thought. If things got really bad and every car company went out of business and we were left with one vehicle line to do it all, what could work? I mean, daily driver, racing, hauling, RV, drifting...everything. I am talking about actual production versions of the same vehicle.

I thought the the F-150 is the only real option. You want to race? Buy a Raptor. Or an SVT. You want luxury? King Ranch with leather or Lincoln version. You want to haul stuff? Plenty of options there. You want to go off-road? 4WD is available. you need an RV? Add a camper shell or hook up the RV. You have a big family? Get the 4-door or add a cap to the bed. As a small economy car it kinda fails, but what else gets close?

I like the Fairmont choice. My choice was similar with a '80's Malibu:
    2 door
    4 door
    Wagon
    El Camino

The modern version of this would be the Aussie Utes and their dirivatives of the GTO.

GMC Sierra. Everything the F150 can do, only better. more power. better economy. more options.

Now, then again - I just want one - the quad cab - seats four, hauls luggage, kicks ass, takes names.

The Holden Ute and the Malibu are let down by their lack of off-road and icy conditions ability.

If you had to narrow it to one single car, I think the Audi Allroad is your only option. With a manually adjustable suspension, you can raise it and add rally tires for the dirt, or lower it and add slicks for the track. You can haul a bit, carry a bit, and even sleep in the back.

Your perceived lack of off road and icy condition ability is aided by (allegedly, I don't really know) not having to drive in the snow very often. 6+ years in an 81 Camaro in Syracuse NY - has to be better than that. I'd do it. Buy me one and I'll prove it.

Speaking as a former Fairmont owner (and huge lover of wagons), NO. The Mustang bits are just buried so far down under so many layers of cheap-ass crap that it's just not worth it.

    Pursuit package Blazer FTW.

I grew up in a Fairmont wagon. It was a heinous piece of car. Three transmissions before someone decided perhaps the cat shouldn't be bolted to the pan, It couldn't be aligned until my father drilled new holes in the strut towers, and perhaps most unforgivable of all, the horn button was on the end of the turnsignal lever. Who punches the turnsignal in anger? One thing it did have over the Malibu wagon was rear windows that opened.

Off-road? 90% of what most people consider off-road can be done with a 2wd car. But if you insist...
