As both a techi and a ludidte I'll be the first to admit this gizmo they call Sophia is somewhat interesting, however once you get past the animatronics there isn't much too it. What I find amazing though, is all the hype. I'm just going to go ahead and call bullE36 M3 on this whole berkeleying parade of worthless publicity stunts right now.

This 'thing' is not even remotely AI and is more of a puppet then anything else. Mind you, it's a very clever puppet but at this point it's just a fascinating gizmo. I cannot say with any certainty that I fully understand the code, but I smell bullE36 M3.

Anyway, I thought i would share my thoughts.

Just for fun, here is a video of a creepy robot head I built last year...

I see it as more baby steps.  There was a video recently of a robot doing back-flips.  Meaning engineers and programmers are getting the mechanics ever closer to a functional android.  In other areas, folks are working on getting them to "look" and interact correctly. In others, folks are working on the AI programming.  I wouldn't expect any one group to be trying to work on all three aspects at the same time. But eventually, those three groups will come together... and hopefully put together something that can keep my house clean. cheeky

But baby steps to what end?  Haven't we all seen enough "robots with AI become self-aware and take over the world and destroy mankind" movies to know that this will end badly?

I dont understand what the end goal is here. Do we have a lack of humans and we need to start replacing them? Do we want something to do our chores for us? We have dishwashers and clothes washers. We have roombas that will vacuum and there isnt any need to try to make them be like the robot maid from the jetsons. I guess its just tech for the sake of tech. Just dont teach it how to build more robots. Then they will take over the earth.

Dude, there is only one end goal reason to build a robot that is of human form, and shaped like a female.

Oh, right..........maybe the robots wiping out humanity isnt such a terrible thing.

Many countries have a below replacement birth rate and we're living longer so robots are kinda necessary.  Japan is infamous for being anti-nookie never mind child rearing.  Italy shockingly is below replacement rate.  Whatever happened to those hot-blooded males of theirs?  Having said that I look at the productivity of some co-workers and I'm starting to have ideas about how a robot would be a better fit. indecision

I can think of all sorts of uses for a humanoid robot. Some good. Some notsomuch.

Right now, for reasons one would rather not go over here, farmers in the US lack the labor for harvesting crops. Hard, back-breaking labor not many are willing to do. Sounds like a perfect task for an android.

Beyond that, why do humans do a lot of things that have no real bearing on their continued survival? They often do them just to see if they can.

"Westworld" needs staff.

Everybody who is going to own cars is pretty much there now. The next big leap might be to owning a "private surrogate". It would be a huge boom for the Japanese car makers to expand their market.

But probably a better task for a machine with four wheels and eleven hands.  Humans are very seldom the perfect shape to do a job. We are pretty universal, and can create tools and techniques to do anything, but a six foot tall two handed humanoid is not a good design for picking strawberries.

You all realize that it will be the porn industry that will ultimately find a use for this.  Just like they were the ones the drove the development of credit card use on the web and the cd and dvd formats.
