Haha, ouch. I used to work at one of those oil change places and a woman brought a car in that was fitted with one of those. While I changed her oil she went down the street for "lunch." Job done, she comes back, and waddayaknow! The interlock wouldn't let her start the car. She tried to get me to start it for her a couple times, but in the end I kindly let her store it in our parking lot overnight and called her a cab. Sheeeeesh...

I hated those things. Never required to have one on my rig but as a mechanic I hate them. I don't want to put my lips on it first off. Second, we had this guy come back lit and start his van when none of us sober mechanics could get it to start.

Can you use an air compressor on it? It would suck to have the car blocking up a bay with the ignition locked so you couldn't get it in neutral.

A friend of mine used to blow up a bunch of balloons before he went out. I really disapprove of any impaired driving, but mad props for creativity.

Yeah, most units now have a feature to help prevent the balloons and air compressors. Ours require you to hum and blow (insert joke, here). And require rolling retests.
Nothing is fool proof, but an interlock does a much better job of keeping track of an offender than simply taking his lamented piece of paper away.

Really?! Ours could NEVER do that. Simply unable to. Way to dangerous to have that even be an option. We set the horns off, if the client is failing. Effective, yet safe.

I'm wondering if something else went wrong, because I have to imagine that it would be seriously dangerous if it just shut off while driving on the road. Car started, was running for a minute, I launched, and about 1/4 of the way through the course I heard the thing beep, another 1/4 of the way through the course the car shut off. I have no idea though, car started right back up after blowing in it... I don't know exactly how it works.
