I briefly considered painting my foxbody in Gulf livery. Ultimately it just seemed kinda wrong, though.

What are you talking about? That red is only obtained using the blood of unicorn births mixed with powdered hen's teeth.

This is my favorite part of the piece:
"Some were away being restored, and the “Dirty Girl” - the 2008 GT1 Le Mans winning Aston Martin DBR9, complete with race track dirt - was in a cocoon just down the road, revelling in her grime. (No one is allowed to clean her. She is to remain in glorious post-victory filth for ever more. And why not? She earnt it!)"

Seriously... Martini, Brumos, Sunoco, Fast Clown...there are a lot of better options out there.

Uh, the guy in the picture isn't the owner man, he's the mechanic/part-time driver...

Gulf is a good livery. Very distinctive with an excellent history and some interesting variations - I'm partial to the big arrow. Its weak point is that it's just so freakin' easy to do that it's been done to death. When I see a Gulf livery car, I see someone who took the easy way out. Even the General Lee livery is harder to do.
Then again, there are still guys rocking out with three chords, so maybe simple and common isn't always bad.

Some Gulf liveries are easy to do. (Basically the most famous ones, the GT-40 and 917 versions). As you see in the collection, the Gulf stuff can get quite intricate. It was an evolving livery, much like Petty's STP.
