I will also throw out there the European version of The Pretenders before they got popular in the USA.
At the very core I find that back then they were a punk bank that had a lead singer who could really sing and raise them out of the "bar band" ranks. They also were part of that punk vibe that went mainstream along with The Clash.

Now that we've gone slightly farther afield, I mentioned this in another thread the other day, but this hits the automotive/music intersection:

The mandolin player is my hero. Saw them live and he plays that stuff while looking casually around the room. Actually reminds me a little of Billy Zoom and his whole "Well, they're going to play easy stuff and writhe all over the place, huh? Well I'll play hard stuff and make it look like it's nothing..."

here goes:

Queen is perhaps the most under-rated classic rock band, and Brian May (the lead guitarist not only has a phd, but is also one of the best guitarist that I've ever heard. The band was one I really missed out on being born in 82.

Jim Croce would have been as big as the Eagles if he didn't die so young (no drugs, a plane crash) - a real tragedy, awesome songs.

Nickel Creek is perhaps the best modern country band, and Brad Paisley has an awesome ode to Alabama now that's fantastic.

Junior Brown is the man on a steel guitar.

Jimmy Mattingly is perhaps the best fiddle player to make it big.

Not that I'm opinionated, or anything...

Love the MC5. Also, there's this little-known proto-punk band called 'Death', comprised of 3 black brothers (siblings), formed in the early '70s.

Pretty much anything John Reis has been involved with is amazing. This includes Rocket from the crypt, Drive like Jehu, Hot snakes, the sultans, the night marchers.

Lately though I cannot get enough of this old album

Do the pop!. Aussie garage from 76-87. Some amazing stuff that still sounds fresh today.

Oh yeah and pretty much anything Billy Childish has ever done.

To me the whole punk/ska thing peaked and died with Operation Ivy. Seriously. Who the berkeley did it better than them? I've been listening to Drive Like Jehu pretty religiously. Young Widows have been rocking my socks. Warning, this song may cause you to do damage to your own property:

Ive been on a stint of OLD Unwritten Law, Suicide Machines, Pennywise, Millencolin, Bouncing Souls. There is a real good local band called The Bastard Suns, its like a mix of Sublime (40oz to Freedom-ish), and Dropkick. Seen em live atleast 10 times, totally worth it everytime too!

I seriously need to turn off the punk and put on slower stuff whenever im driving, or else I get a lead foot...

ROFL! I tried to switch to New Wave in the car, didn't help. The post 1980 part of "The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads" (Rhino expanded re-issue) has been living in the car for three weeks.

In the RX-8 I currently have JFA, Negative Approach,Dissonance, Butthole Surfers, Minor Threat, S O D, Gang Green, Bad Brains, The Damned. In the F-100 (cassette player) I have The Vatican Commandos, Dissonance and The Guilty Bystanders.

My wrench-time-in-the-garage music features the following bands heavily: Cramps, X, Lush, My Bloody Valentine, KMFDM as well as some newer stuff, like The Old Crow Medicine Show, the Hellblinki Sextet and the Avett brothers.

The two things that all of the wrench time music has in common are that I love it and I've listened to it often enough that I can either let it fade into the background when I have to concentrate or let it come to the foreground and enjoy it when I'm doing something that doesn't require too much brain power.

I've found that if I introduce new music to the garage, I'm liable to concentrate on the music and either muck something up or not get any work done. New music and audio books are for the gym, where I welcome the distraction.

That was awesome! Two thoughts...
1. Night Music was the coolest thing ever televised. It makes up for all the horrible stuff that has been televised and justifies the invention of television. There should be a cable channel that is Night Music reruns 24 hours a day.
2. I didn't know Joe Cocker had a brother.

I might have missed it, but nobody has mentioned the Pixies yet, have they?

Funny story: The Pixies did a reunion tour about 6 years back. They played at a small, local venue and only about 10% of the crowd was below age 30. It seems that all the exposure they got from the Fight Club soundtrack with the younger generation didn't translate well into the kids wanting to see them live.

I don't really consider them punk and this is more of a punk thread. Thus the lack of a mention.
