Eddie, I had completely forgotten about turntable applications for radio! That's actually kinda ironic, since I started my career in a small town radio station. They were both DD (and your description of how DD works was right on the money, I still recall one of ours having some sort of wiring problem..and the thing would shock you if you touched the base & the platter at the same time ). Yeah, DD was the right choice for radio, but for reasons other than sound quality. I can still recall "slip-cuing", where you find the beginning of the groove on the record, and hold the record with your hand while turning on the turntable and letting it get up to full speed. You talk for a minute, and hold the record stationary..when you released it, it was almost an instant start for the song. We actually had felt covers on the platter to facilitate this (and at the time, we thought the felt helped prevent damage to the vinyl).

Still, for a home unit (freed from any other consideration than reproducing music), I'll take a belt drive if I can find one.

If you've been DJing clubs, I'd love to hear some stories..it seems that back in the day, radio guys & club guys had more in common than I realize! (insert "thumbs up" icon here..)

I'm chiming in late and I'm no audiophile. In fact, I'm the opposite. I have an awesome vinyl collection though, picked from thrift stores and opportunistic giveaways.

You got the right idea. Or, at least, the right yard stick. If you're having fun, you're winning!

That pre amp you showed is a Bottlehead kit. Nice stuff and not too expensive. Really sexy pictures on their website too!

(edit) My amp, right now, playing Pandora from my Blackberry:

Guess it sorta looks like a Bottlehead kit, now that I think about it!

Cool thing about an amp like this - you can get the bones for $100 or so on ebay. Recapping isn't hard or expensive, and that oak base I made didn't cost more than, oh, maybe $20. But the iron on that thing is impressive and it'll play right down below 30 Hz without any trouble. A little PP EL84 like that is maybe 12 or 14 watts per channel. But, really, it's more power than you need. I never find myself saying "if only I had more power!".

And a great pic of a Bottlehead kit:
