Well... it's truly "unlimited" but it automatically defaults to wifi whenever possible, which is awesome.

What's not awesome is that it's limited to 300mb network data.

If it weren't for the Pandora wildcard, i'd be all over that. I don't know if i can hit my work wifi with a phone.

I am intrigued with this service at the moment, but have not tried it.

Have you not tried it because they are not currently adding customers?

Overall, this Republic offer will be hard to make financially stable. When you are not on WiFi, Republic buys in bulk of Sprint. this kind of buying and reselling is know as a MVNO (Mobile Vitual Network Opperator) http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/mvno-republic-wireless-go-truly-unlimited-will...

    Republic "Fair Use Policy" states:
"So, over time, if you don’t bring your CUI (Cellular Usage Index) back into a reasonable range, we’ll help you find a more suitable, traditional cellular carrier."
At that point you have spent $200 on the Republic Handset that will likely not work on any other network.

I wrote quite a bit on this similar topic recently. So as to not re-write it all, here is the link.

For both PHeller and 92Celica, the Metro PCS is not an option since they do not own service where you live.

For 92Celica, there is a small local player called Revol but I have little good to say about them. The overall experience should be similar to Metro PCS with maybe some lesser in building penetration from their simplistic network.

Intrigued by Virgin Mobile Prepaid... WIth my local cell carrier, my dumbphone bill is $55 a month with 1000 peak min, and unlimited from 9-9, unlimited text and data - but since its a dumbphone, I cant really stream anything, so data is basically page loads and some emails w/ attachments. ALso Im grandfathered in, so my plan isnt available any longer - theyre jacking me around each month because I am getting a waaaay sweeter deal than any new customer. Everytime I go into a store to talk about a smartphone w/data plan, they salivate...because Im about to get gang raped with their crap plans and high pricing.

Virgin Prepaid has a good $45/mo plan - 1200 anytime mins (Im not sure how many mins I use a month honestly, need to check my bill), but unlimited text and data - they say the 2.5gb/mo of "High Speed" data will get you 400k page loads, and 91 hours of streamed music. From there, youre reduced to 256k, which is dog slow. But I already have wifi at home, so that will help there. Like 92C said, not sure if work will allow me to connect to their wifi, but still, this is a real appealing option for me.

Anyone have any experience with Virgin Mobiles customer service or coverage?

Virgin Mobile's US operation is owned by Sprint and uses Sprint's towers. When you join on w/ VM you get use of Sprint's towers and Sprint's towers only. No sharing, no roaming. Be sure to consult the coverage maps to verify that is good for you (I suspect it is) but there will be rural areas where you will have no coverage.

This part about knocking the speeds down (known as Throttling) is new to VM. So new that it may have not started yet. The website says...
Starting early 2012, if you use over 2.5GB of data in a month, your data speeds will be reduced to 256 kbps or below for the rest of your month. During this time, you may experience slower page loads and file downloads and lags in streaming media. Data speeds will return to normal as soon as your next plan month starts. If you'd rather not wait for your new month to start, you can restart your plan immediately through My Account.

The best handsets at VM are The Optiums(es) or the HTC. The best value is the Optimus V which can often be found onsale at Best Buy, Target or Radio Shack for $99.

2gb is quite a bit IMO, but it really depends on WHAT you like to do...

pandora, hotlink threads, porn, it all adds up.

Indeed, especially when you get in to things like Netflix streaming. Last time I was on vacation (lots of time spent in the car watching movies when I wasn't driving, and pandora when I was) I hit just over 7gb of useage in one month. With regular use and web browsing and whatever else and Pandora on my commute to work I average about 4.5gigs a month. 2gigs is nothing.

I've never used more than about 1.5GB on AT&T, though almost all of my use is through a wifi network and I use my iPad for most leisure time browsing these days. Agreed that 2GB is nothing if you use it to watch netflix over the cell network.

how about some useful raw numbers?

If all you do is browse sites, its unlikely you'd reach 2gb, even checking them multiple times a day, unless its a super image rich site, like Flickr or something.

So lets break down 2gb a month. thats 67megs a day.

Your average compressed mp3 song is about 7megs, about 3megs for most AAC songs.

Average standard definition Youtube stream in mono sound is 30~70 megs per 10 minutes. 480p is not much more, but the step to 720 is huge in data.

Also have to consider that going from a older/slower smartphone would probably condition you not to jump on the interwebz on your phone for everything, or coming from a phone with no internet at all. It would probably be inaccurate to use your current usage as a gauge for your future usage on a more capable phone. Plus 1st month will probably be the heaviest as you'd have the new toy novelty factor.

I'm on a way outdated Blackberry with AT&T and it was always on EDGE network so everything is slooooow. I only use it for reading basic text interface type websites in my idle time here and there. I have the unlimited plan but I dont even scratch 50mb, in the past it might have been more but my phones been dying/buggy in the last year or so. Why pay for unlimited when I used so little? my work discount made the cost difference almost neglible. I'm glad I'm grandfathered in as I just ordered an iphone and I'm sure my usage will go up.

Can someone verify that Sprint's unlimited is truly unlimited with no throttling?

There had been some mis-statements by Sprint's CEO recently regarding throttling that set off a wave of stories/press releases.

    The mistake: http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article.php?a=9576
    The retraction: http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article.php?a=9580
    The PR: http://community.sprint.com/baw/community/sprintblogs/announcements/blog/2012/01/0...

Some reading between the lines: Sprint's official statement...
Sprint does not throttle any postpaid (does not apply to Sprint's Prepaid brands, Boost and Virgin) phone data users (does not aply to modem users, just phones) for on-network or off-network usage. Sprint is the only national carrier offering smartphone users truly unlimited data with no throttling, metering or overages while on the Sprint network.

As a direct answer to your question...
No. Sprint contract service does not throttle or cap data usage done via phone handset.

I've got an Optimus V on Virgin. $35 for 300 minutes, unlimited everything else. I've had it for 3 months and am happy with it. I had T-Mobile to-go before - $.10 per minute flat rate. I ended up about $10/month on that. So $35 is a big jump, but the Sprint network works much better than the T-Mobile one around here, and it's a smart phone.

That Republic Wireless is interesting. Especially since I have wifi both at work and at home, and cell coverage sucks in the building at work. In theory, my performance would improve by going to wifi when possible.

I haven't experienced or heard of anyone encountering throttling with Sprint. I've used Sprint for 12 years. They're been awesome. Best deal out there if they have good coverage in your area. Every person I've talked to that has AT&T tries to defend the craptasticness of their network because they want to marry their iPhones. And the Samsung Galaxy II S is amazing.

Sprint also seems to be pretty much the only carrier actively trying to improve their overall network (not just rolling out 4g) as far as data speeds are concerned, or are at least the only ones who publicly talk about it.

I have been pretty darned happy with sprint. I have 4G at work and a solid 3G signal at home (out in the sticks). Over the last year I typically used approximately 1.2 GB a month. though I did have two peaks over the 2 GB per month level.

If your a heavy/nerdy user... 2gb will somewhat limit you.

I haven't had anything to track useage since I rooted my phone but for the first month or so that I was stock I think I would just go over the 2gb.

2gb isn't THAT bad, but you will have to think about it likely.

I went over because I only really worry about wifi in 3g areas or areas with poor reception... which was no where at the time I was tracking data. I would also stream radio shows daily.
