tonight I saw the commercial for Infiniti's new hybrid...I think it's an E or an F. Anyway, maybe I'm the only who feels this way, but don't most folks think Prius when the word hybrid is rolled out to describe a car or truck? Therefore, they ought to have a name for vehicles, beyond PERFORMANCE hybrid, when the electric motor is being used "in place off" extra cylinders/to add more horepower.

Any suggestions? So far, all I've come up with is HYPER-hybrid. But to me, the use of the word hybrid clouds the issue.

    hyp-brid

apt description since I've yet to see one that can stand up to the dirty earth hating version of the same car in terms of performance.

The Accord Hybrid tried this years ago and was a total flop. The electric motor was used for extra power and not mpg improvement.

i'm sure they could wedge the word "EXTREME" in there somewhere.. that's what the kids say these days, right?

No luxury car buyer will buy a standard (read: slow) hybrid. The Lexus HS is a good example of this. Considering 70% of BMW drivers think their car is FWD, the luxury car types will probably fall for the marketing BS more easily than us enthusiasts.

I don't blame Honda for cooking up the CR-Z "performance hybrid"- I think they really believe that they are trying to do right by the earth (in addition to making profit) and that they need to capture enthusiasts who would otherwise avoid hybrids in order to ensure the type's future. But we all know how badly Honda screwed the pooch with the CR-Z.

I want one of those Accord hybrids. Not an "OMG GOTTA HAVE" car, but one I'd consider if I could pick it up for $4000.

The new Lexus hybrid commerical is misleading as well. Each time I see it I think it's an ad for Scion. It bugs me that it appears to be marketed towards a group that either is not interested in a hybrid or can afford a Lexus to begin with.

That makes it sound like it's never... urm... "been driven", if you know what I mean.

Back on topic, I would think just calling it something boring and corporate-speak would do, like "Electric Torque Assist". *The new Ford Phallus with ETA gets to 60mph a full second faster than the GMC Jimmycab or RAMRunner Big Horn California Edition DaytonaCharger HEMI"*

Agreed. I want neither a Lexus (too expensive) nor a Hybrid (stigmatized in my mind as a soul-less washing mashine on wheels). Why on earth would they try to make it look like a scion, too? Don't Lexus owner shy away from little "sporty" cars? It would be like buying a Maybach that was the size of a 1series BMW.

I always thought a car should be designed to do one or 2 things really well, and not attempt to do them all or it'll be spoiled for everything. You can't say "Look here design crew, make a car that is small and sexy, but big on interior space, full of luxury equipment, and make it sporty. Oh and make sure it gets great mileage, can be marketed to the young and the old, and isn't too expensive." Well, great, so 1 car to do everything. Good luck with that.

    YUP, exactly

whenever I hear hybrid, I think of Jeremy talking about the prius vs a land rover, then the M3 vs Prius mpg test....enough said

Which explains the massive, stinking piles of fail known as "Crossover 4-door coupes" or whatever the marketing zombies have designated that particular niche market. What it doesn't explain is why anyone sane would approve building those pieces of crap.

BMW just introduced a Hybrid 7 series. Sounds as if it is just so that they can say they have one. Doesn't do much.

Indeed. If I was gonna blow all that cash on a 7 series, It would have to be a V12, and not a hybrid. Of course, if I had the money for a V12 7 series (which I totally don't) I probobly wouldn't spend it on 1 car...
