Check out this really cool log hauler. It's a steam powered crawler. An engineer sat in the back and stoked the fire while one guy basically rode on the front axle and steered. Apparently the steerman had issues with cinders going down the back of his neck and used to wear thick leather suits to keep from getting burned. This steamer has a shed built on over the front axle to stop that from happening.

If you ever get the chance, get to a steam engine/tractor show, especially if they have a dyno competition. There's nothing like standing 10ft away from a 130 year old tractor going full blast

I actually inherited an old Deere hit & miss 1hp engine. I got it kinda running a few years back, but I think I need a new mag coil. It has like a 6" bore and an 8-10" stroke, and the intake valve is vacuum powered. The exhaust and ignition run off the cam, and the water cooling is a constant loss system. Really cool, but tough to move around. Has to weigh 300lbs.

That big canvas belt you see at the beginning of the video is wrapped around the flywheel and connects to the dyno or other farm implements.
We watched one come loose and hit one of the operators in the arm when they tried to jump start another tractor... he wasn't too happy about that

I grew up around steam engines, threshing machines and antique tractors. My family has about 25 steam engines, with about 12 in operating condition. We have two "road locomotives," which are steam engines placed on truck chassis. Here is what happens when you load the hot firebox full of sawdust. It's pretty spectacular at night--during the daytime, all you get is burnt hair and clothes. The first clip is my uncle's road locomotive; I don't think it's that same engine in the second clip, as the whistles I hear aren't as loud as my uncles.
The first pic is a scale model, fully functional steam engine. The second pic is the road locomotive, pulling our calliope, the third is when our family helped move a double-barrel covered bridge that was arsoned.
