Anyone have any insight? I think they are cool cars and I miss my BMW wagon. Good? Bad? Otherwise?
I'd love a TDI version too.

I like them. My cousin has one. It's an '06 with the 2.0L turbo with the Sport Package.. It was the first year so they only came FWD.
I've spent a long time in that car. I like everything about it. It also had a DSG which is the only automatic I've ever liked.
The only word of advice I have is that if you want the 2.0L, make sure the cam follower has been replaced. This seems to be a big issue with the 2.0L. It can come apart and end up where it shouldnt.
Before I bought the Jetta I looked at them and the Volvo C-30. For me the bad was it's only a two door. I like the size and everything else about it.
Hit up some of the VW forums.

Interesting. So the '06 MY was FWD only? From then on, was it Quattro for all of them?
As for the number of doors, I'm only considering the 5 door. Like this:

They only sell the 5-Door in the US.
IIRC only the 2.0L Turbo had FWD in 2006. The 3.2L V6 had Quattro. I believe either 2007 or 2008 was when Quattro came to the 2.0L
This is my cousins.
I looked at them before I got the mini, in the S-Line trim they ride really rough, and my insurance agent seemed to think that they were made of gold.
I love them and want to get one but you can only get the manual transmission with a FWD model. All the AWD have the DSG.

That's an excellent plate! lol

I'd love a TDI version too.I just didn't buy a TDI Sportwagen (same engine) for these reasons:

Well that's pretty terrible news. I would greatly prefer to have a manual and AWD. Chalk it up to the automotive smart folks again not to offer that combo.

NHTSA Investigation
Thanks for the heads up ransom. Interesting to see that the high pressure fuel pumps are issues on these cars. I've also been looking at the BMW 335i and the HPFP is a huge issue on those cars as well.
Since it is virtually the same vehicle as the VW, they have many of the same mods as well.
My cousins has many small mods like exhaust, CAI, remapped ECU, etc.
The car has about 250 hp currently. Very quick car. The 2.0L Turbo is a very competent engine and has a lot going for it.
I think that they are really good-looking, but I can't afford a "premium" 5-door. If I was in the market, it would be hard to justify the cost over a GTI 5-Door .
The major difference is that the VW GTI is a true 5-Door Hatch and the A3 is a Wagon.
