The wife and I bought a new house (new to us.) There is much carpet that would best be replaced. So, oh wise world of GRM, how do I buy carpet and get the best value?
Any tips, tricks or buying advice appreciated.

Carpet needed for living, dining, two bed and office/porch. In total about 1500sq ft. I am more interested in high quality at good prices as apposed to low quality at low prices.

Sorry, no advice to the question you asked, but here is the answer to one that you didn't: Do hard floor in the dining room. Carpet+food=no no.

Check into "seconds" - oftentimes they're just slightly off from the intended color but still look good, they just don't match the sample book closely enough. I have an in with a guy (a national vice president at one of the major carpet companies) and that's what he recommended to me.

Quality commercial carpet with good underpad in any high traffic areas.

We had an open concept place, with one central carpeted room that you needed to go through to get anywhere. After the third time, we went commercial, and it would have lasted indefinitely, had a tenants dog not ripped up a section.

I forget exactly what the pecking order is, but it goes something like:

Residential Grade < Commercial < School < Church

Same thing. There is cheap commercial, and good commercial (which is still pretty inexpensive). It's well worth paying for the good stuff.

Get the best pad. Even cheap carpet feels great on the top of the line padding.

We bought laminate at 99 cents a square foot. With kids and dogs it was really the way to go for us. You can get some really nice laminate for $2 a square foot or less. I do like carpet in bedrooms though.

You really can't go wrong with Pat and his family.

Exactly why I always ask random questions here and other car forums. My recent question about trucks, ended with someone (on another board) sending me a Nissan VPP claim number which knocked an additional $1300 off the already good price.

    Basically picked up my tag.
