So I had a question about trading a car in. According to KBB, my Miata is worth more than the car I want to trade it in for. Is it possible to do an even trade on a car through a dealership? It seems impossible to me.

Yeah, it is possible. But it's most likely a situation where the dealer knows it can make at least a few bucks selling your trade-in Miata, while eliminating a car from the lot that they just want to be gone.

That being said, a few years ago the Mazda dealership I go to for random parts took an NSX in on trade for a used '94 Miata R. Worked out well for both sides in this case.

Why not? Both cars are worth a certain amount. I know people that have traded cars and got cash back.

Why not sell yours private party and pocket the difference? Having cash is also a much stronger negotiating tool with a dealer than a trade.

Cause 1) There really isn't a strong market for Miatas in my area, 2) mine requires some work which I'm sure will cause people to try low ball me, and 3) it's faster to trade it in.

How much are you looking for and what kind of work does it need?

I may be prepared to make you an insulting, low-ball offer.

I once went car shopping driving a '67 Mustang that was about 3 years old at the time. Because I was drivng it and I told the salesman I was looking for a used Cougar he wasn't too enthused. He said we might be able to work a deal but that the 2 cars were too close in value for him to want to take my Mustang in trade. At that point I said it wasn't my car, but my sister's, which made things a bit easier.

Woody it needs a new Catalytic Converter, and there's some scratches and marks in the paint.

I'm trying to trade it in for a wagon of some kind, around 5k.
