Re my question: was actually looking for the Porsche 917/30
Hamilton?
how did the 917/30 end Can Am?
The 2J is considered the end of Can Am, because the rulemakers deemed it illegal, so chapparal quit. once they quit, the series was effectively over.
as for Hamilton, he was 1 year 81 days older on the day of his first win, than the current record holder was on the day of his first win. (confused enough yet?)
Actually, like Luke, most folks agree about the 917/30. When Chaparral pulled out after the 2J (and I am probably the world's biggest Chaparral fan - anyone who loved the Can-Am needs to make the pilgraimage to Midland, Texas to visit the Chaparral wing at the petroleum museum there - see my article on the museum in a back issue of CMS) it was just the loss of one car - the McLarens were still there. When the Penske/Porsche juggernaut pretty much wiped out the competition, it became obvious that no one could compete with them without having major manufacturer backing and a huge development budget. After Porsche pulled out due to lack of competition, Shadow pretty much ruled the roost until the series died for the first time.
Actually, though, I don't agree with the excuse that Porsche killed the Can-Am. McLaren dominated just as much as Porsche for several years, only seriously threatened by the technically superb - but unreliable - Chaparrals. I think it was a combination of factors, partly the rise of the need for more and more technically advanced cars, more and more stringent rules, and the continual domination by one team (and the identity of that team changed from McLaren to Prosche to Shadow).
As far as the pure Can-Am, i.e. virtually no rules other than safety and full bodywork - the FIA killed it, starting with the moveable aero devices rule that was actually put into effect before the 2J was built, in response to wing failures in F1.
Anyone remember that Roger Penske used to drive for Chaparral back in the USRRC days, just before he retired to become an owner?
And the youngest winner begins with a V - I'll let someone else get this one.
thanks for the clarification jgp... I just know that some, especially those involved in the sport, say that the exclusion of Chapparal was "the beginning of the end". Pete Lyons is one that I can remember off the top of my head, he said it in the Can Am Thunder DVD. (good documentary, but Sam Posey's Can Am: a speed odyssey is better)
and yes, his name does begin with a V.
nobody knows a young guy who's name starts with a V...he won this year...at Monza...won pole....led every lap...nobody?
i figured it was so obvious that everyone was embarassed to say: sebastian vettel, bitches!
great jorb AC.
the floor is yours.
Angry....we need your input.
what kind of car did Damone drive in Fast Times at Ridgemont High?
It was a Trans Am, right? Either way, my stepdad's a TV repairman, and he's got this bitchin' set of tools and I know we can fix it right up.
this is working about as well as Chinese toy making companies.
BUMP!
It was a Z/28 wasn't it?
Deffinately a Z/28, rusty has the board.
What was the first car to come with anti lock brakes?
If I am not mistaken the Jensen FF was the first production car to have antilock brakes as standard equipment. It was a Dunlop Maxaret system originally designed for aircraft use.
That was fast. It's your turn Jensenman.
Following in the Jensen vein (sorta): the Jensen Healey was the first production car to use the 9 series Lotus engine, but the J-H was not built by Lotus. The engine went on to be used in the Lotus-built Elite, Excel and Esprit.
What was the last non-Lotus built car to use that engine?

WRONG! Mike Damone was the ticket scalper who knocked up Stacy Hamilton (Brad's little sister), then didn't show up at the agreed-upon time to take her to the free clinic for the $150 abortion. The next day, Damone is shown driving a green AMC Gremlin with a piece of cardboard taped to the driver's door, where Linda (Stacy's whore best friend, the object of Brad's poolside masturbation fantasy) had spray-painted "Little Prick".
You guys were thinking of Jefferson's Z28, which Spicoli crashes into a big pile of cinderblocks.
So, the answer is AMC Gremlin, and the floor is still mine.
New question: What is the song playing in the movie when Brad whacks it while fantasizing about Linda?
Guessing. Its so easy by the cars
Jensenman was it the talbot sunbeam?
Yes, it was. racinginc15 now has the floor.
First production car with all wheel drive. Here's a hint there is one in my garage awaiting restoration.
The Jensen FF (Ferguson Formula) once again.
If you have one, that's a VERY rare bird here in the Colonies.

"Movin' in Stereo" by The Cars
Although, it disturbs me you refer to it as the "Brad Whacks it..." scene, instead of its proper term; "Topless Phoebe Cates Scene"
and while the Jensen FF was availible in AWD, only 318 of them were fitted with it. Technically Subarau and American Motors Company had versions in 1972.
But if you really want to get obnioxus, Williys introduced AWD with the Jeep. While intended as a 4 wheel drive, it was actually truely AWD, becuase the wheels always turned.
